As some of you know I'm currently on an animation course, the final result of which should be a CG animation lasting 30 - 60 seconds. Naturally, I plan on doing Conan.

Now I'm assuming that I'm allowed to do such a thing (an animation we were shown last year was practically traced from an episode of Futurama, and it got 3rd highest marks), I've decided that the best thing to do is make a sort of "trailer reel" for Conan: making a montage based on the passage at the beginning of The Scarlet Citadel which is thus:

"Know, O Prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars.
Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia,Hyperborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold.  But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west.
Hither came Conan the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the earth under his sandled feet."

So therefore my ridiculously ambition animation will be thus, the directions like so:

(Know, O Prince...an age undreamed of)
Fade from black, the curve of the earth is seen from space. The camera moves through the atmosphere to the ground.
(When shining kingdoms... beneath the stars)
The camera sweeps across the Hyborian continent. The camera moves through clouds to reveal -

(Nemedia...)
Belverus, a city with red tiled roofs and churches, with a great Germanic castle in the centre, is bathed in early morning sunshine. An eagle flies toward the camera, which follows it into the sun's glare, which fades to -

(Ophir)
A sunbathed meadowland with orchards and groves, a great road leading to a distant renaissance-Italian city. The autumnal leaves blow in the wind, a great gust obscuring our vision in a hail of golds and browns. The leaves scatter to reveal -

(Brythunia)
A landscape with hills and rivers, the sky turbulent and pregnant with rain, the sun striking through in shafts. A few flashes of distant lightning bring thunder, a great flash blinding us, snapping us to -

(Hyperborea)
A mighty grey castle stands among glaciers and snowcapped mountains, strange figures moving in the distance. A stroke of lightning strikes a cliff, the rocks and snow engulfing us in darkness, fading out to -

(Zamora, with it's dark-haired women...)
The camera zooms from the black, revealing it to be the hair of a beautiful woman on the ramparts of a city of purple spires and domes. The camera pans along the rampart to a tower -

(... and towers of spider-haunted mystery)
The top of the tower has strange silhouettes among it's gargoyles and ornamentations. One of these moves with the unmistakable gait of a spider. The camera pans down swiftly, the blurred brickwork fading into -

(Zingara with its chivalry...)
A ship's deck, with two buccaneers fencing. There is a magnificent Spanish port in the distance. The camera pans up to the billowing sails, which changes to -

(Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem...)
A flag. The camera zooms out to reveal that this is the standard of a vast army approaching a pastoral walled city on a dusty road. A soldier kicks up dust into the camera. The dust settles and we cut to -

(Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs...)
A chariot's wheel revolving. The camera zooms out to reveal the chariot, it's rider, and the two horses. The chariot is running along a paved road to a great city with black pyramids and citadels, with serpent motifs everywhere. The chariot passes some tombs, with a black serpent slithering among the shadows. The snake notices the camera, and lunges at it, where we cut to -

(Hyrkania whose riders... of the world)
A curved sword is thrust into the ground. The camera pans up, following the sword to the arm and face of a Mongol-like warrior. He ties his tigerskin cloak about him, retrieves his sword, and leaps onto his horse. There are thousands of horses and riders moving in a valley behing him, where the scene fades gently to -

(Aquilonia... dreaming west)
The camera zooms slowly to Tarantia, the red sunset illuminating the blue and golden spires. The camera snaps to a shot with a short hill in the forground -

(Hither came Conan...)
A shadow is cast across the hill, a cloak billowing into the frame -

(Black-haired...)
His long hair billows in the wind -

(Sullen-eyed...)
His blue eyes pierce in the camera -

(Sword in hand...)
His hand grips his standard-issue Aquilonian broadsword -

(a thief...)
In a dark room, we see Conan's silhouette pluck out the ruby eye of the statue of a serpent -

(a reaver...)
Conan raises his sword and roars a battlecry as his mercenary soldiers charge off camera -

(a slayer...)
Quick shots of Conan cutting some Picts to pieces -

(with gigantic melancholies...)
Conan looking soulfully to a burning ship -

(and gigantic mirth...)
Conan in a tavern, a wench on each arm, a flagon of ale in each hand, laughing heartilly -

(to tread the jewelled thrones of the earth beneath his sandalled feet...)
Final portrait shot of Conan a la Frazetta.

A final flurry of images (to be decided) takes us to a black screen, where "Robert E. Howard's Conan" erupts from flames. Then credits, acknowledgements etc.

So that's the jist of it. I do need some help, mostly:
- Where's a good place to find pictures of ancient cities?
- What do you imagine Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyperborea and all the places mentioned above to be like in terms of geography and architecture?
- What nationality will I make Conan's lady friends in the "gigantic mirth" shot?
- What kind of shots should I include in the final montage?
- Do any animations like this actually exist?

If you have any comments or recommendations don't hesitate.

You will most likely find this link to the Wikipedia article on the Hyborian age helpful, as it contains a table of the various lands of the Hyborian world and its real world correspondences.

dear TARANAICH
thats a great huge ambitious project, but its a helluva lot of long hard work.
[ ofcourse, the team creating the '3d conan mmorg game' are currently doing lots of what u want to do ]

[just some 3d shots of 'Conan cutting some Picts to pieces' would be a long project? try this 1st? ]

try the rendered 3d community sites for help, 3d models, etc..

well, good luck + please keep us informed of any samples of yours that we can view?
best wishes. :)

Yogah: I have seen that site, but it's been updated since last time, so thanks very much!

Buxom One: Unfortunately I don't have anything to show as of yet, but we have about 12 weeks to get the storyboard, script, dope sheet etc sorted out, and a further 12 to get everything rendered.

It is indeed ambitious, but having seen some of last year's animations I think it looks quite feasible. I may have to remove some elements, but I'm pretty sure I can make a go of it.

Besides, even if I aim high I'll hit somewhere in the middle, which should still be good.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Ambitious project there, you have my admiration. I think the final shot of your montage should be Conan on his charger, as king, after a battle, with the death and destruction all around him, and the lion banner torn, but still flying high behind him against the setting sun. And, the wenches in the "gigantic mirth" scene should probably be a mixture of races, to reflect his court. Personally, I'd go with Vendhyan, Stygian and Ku****e, but when I say personally, I mean for my own harem ;) You might go Khitain, Stygian, Ku****e, Vendhyan for the visual variety. No matter how you go with it I look forward to hearing about your progress. Good luck :)

Edit-- Hehe, I just saw my post with the "***"s. Gotta love the censorship

Hee, I like your style dude

I wanted to have the Lion Banner in there somewhere, so that'll be good. And I was initially going to have a Brythunian wench (because of all the in-jokes about Brythunian lady's recreational habits) and a Khitani or Vendhyan on the other arm for exotic variety.

On a related note, I'll not shy away from the blood and sex in my clip, within acceptable boundaries of decency of course ;)

24 weeks to finish this may seem like a long time...but it will fly by quickly.

Think of how many different city and landscape models you would have to create before you even get to the character modelling and animation..... Its a lot. And I speak from experience. If you look at my site http://www.kanefilms.com You'll see many 3d CGI shorts. The projects were kept to 1 or 2 scenes on purpose just because of the HUGE amount of work it takes to build a scene and get it looking right before you even think of rendering.

Now if you have the time and the gusto to take this on....I applaud you. I foresee many late nights modelling and animating.

Good luck and send some screenshots when you can.

If I can offer a couple of creative suggestions from the peanut gallery. ;)

I know this is an "amateur" production (in the sense that you're doing it for the fun of it rather than for profit), but I'd like you to consider something.

It's tempting to take these deathless words and directly translate them, one-to-one to visual images, but that would be predictable, and I know you're more creative than that. Sometimes creativity is what you leave out, or the unexpected discoveries that you lead the eye to discover.

Never mind ne, I'm just flappin' my gums. You'll do fine. :)

Believe me, I've given this a great deal of thought, and I do believe I could do this. I've been dabbling in 3d modelling for a couple of years. Besides, I think if I set my sights as high as I can then at least a failure should be alright.

Also, a lot of this may include non-CG elements, and a variety of programs and techniques will be used to cut corners. It (hopefully) won't reduce the quality, but I do have the determination to get this done.

Thanks for being candid with me, I appreciate it.

This was actually a major point of contention for me a couple of months ago when I was thinking about what to do for the project. I eventually came to the decision that the primary reason for this is more about showcasing Robert E Howard and Conan himself, my own abilities kind of secondary. I guess I consider myself more of an illustrator at heart anyway, rendering the imagination of other, greater men in visual form.

But thanks anyway. I'm creating a "display" storyboard right now, which'll be posted when I can.

As you're making your first Conan animation in Paisley, and as I bought my first Conan comic (Savage Tales) and book (Usurper) in Paisley 30 years ago - and since I'm a graduate of GCB&P too - I thought that the coincidence might prove to be a good omen.
Good luck.

Thanks for the link Chrysagon. It'd quite interesting to see the lip-synching in action (and hearing Conan speaking french is not as jarring as it might seem), and the character design's really nice. Thanks again!

Alas, no. In my days at the B&P at Bridgeton you'd have been little more than a wee bairn at yir mammy's knee. We were still sticking text on by hand. Our models were made out of plasticine. Our computers would have been unable even to render the dirt under Conan's fingernails, let alone the Hyborian Age.

For a slightly different take, or inspiration, see one of the links in my signature.
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

Kail (or the Beekan): I think today's computers would still be hard-pressed to render the dirt under Conan's fingernails! Oddly enough, my mother went to B&P, maybe she and you met?

Arias de Camp: I will endeavour to keep everyone informed, though sadly at this early stage there's not much to tell, so bear with me!

Ironhand: Damn, I can't believe how similar my idea is to your own! I can invisage yours as the opening of a TV show easily though, mine is more like the trailer for a movie or game. I really like your scripts, if I become the new Walt Disney I'll definitely petition to get your series made!

As for updates, nothing really. I've completed a VERY rough storyboard, so I'll hijack a scanner within the week to show.

A final flurry of images (to be decided) takes us to a black screen, where "Robert E. Howard's Conan" erupts from flames.  Then credits, acknowledgements etc.
If you have any comments or recommendations don't hesitate.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Final flurry of images might be better illustrated with a simple low-angle camera pan of a gory & empty battlefield with buzzards circling as the fiery sun sets on the horizon , wind whistling , a puddle of blood , a line of footprints out of that blood , camera follows footprints & looks up on an empty trail or pathway , fade to black , fiery words rising up from blood on black marble .
I of course expect a co-writers/directors credit , a check & a chair with my name on it !! hahaha

Oh, before I forget, what is the correct pronunciation of the following:

Aryas - Arr-EYE-ass? ARR-ee-ass? ARR-yass?

Nemedia - Neh-MED-ee-ah? Neh-MEED-ee-ah? Neh-med-EE-ah?

Ophir - OH-firr? Oh-FEER?

Brythunia - Bry-THOON-ee-a? Bry-THUNN-ee-ah?

Hyperborea - pretty sure it's the greek Hyp-err-BOR-ee-ah, but is it?

Zamora - ZAAM-oh-ra? zam-OH-ra? zam-oh-RAH?

Zingara - Zing-AH-rah? ZING-ah-rah?

Koth - Koth as in "broth" or Koth as in "both?"

Shem - I presume it rhymes with "them", right?

Stygia - again, I presume STIJ-ee-ah, or is it STIG-ee-ah, or STEEJ-ee-ah?

Hyrkania - Hurk-AI-nee-a? Hurk-AH-nee-ah?

Aquilonia - I guess Ah-qwi-LOW-nee-ah?

Cimmerian - Kih-MERR-ee-ahn? Si-MERR-ee-an? I know we had a similar topic but I'm still not sure what's best.

Thanks again, this is for the narrator if you haven't already guessed :)

As for my opinion on those names , all of your first phonetic spellings are right on the mark for each one . Except I pronounce it 'S'immeria , don't know why, it just feels right . Are you gonna make this short film available for all of us here on this board to check it out after teasing us & picking our brains ?? Definitely keep us posted , I envy you - go for it man !!
