I'm rather glad I had no high expectations for this to begin with... now the only things left to see is how badly they butcher the character and the howard stories, and if they get a decent fight choreographer.

No , NO NOOOO !!!!!!! - Not the old soldier-of-fortune did unspeakable things & sold his soul & humanity in the name of violence & war & has to redeem himself cliche !!ii!!ii - eeeaaagghh - I just finished the God of War game & THAT'S THE EXACT STORY LINE - that's been so regurgitated in movies , books , games & on & on - like you said Kane - I hope it was just tacked onto that story by a writer who only had no clue about who the character really is . But this doesn't make me too optimistic ;

'Solomon Kane' is scheduled to shoot in Eastern Europe in 2007, with a comic serial and role-playing video game also going into production to tie in with the film's release.

- sounds like it's just a cash-cow now............I think one of you R.E.H. fans is gonna have to get out the whet-stones & finally take the quest to travel to tinseltown ( or is it gonna be Shepperton over there in the U.K.? ) - & get primordial on some of those retarded movie-makers & take their ears off for bounty - cos they just WON'T LISTENNNNNN !!!!iiii!!!!

I'm gonna try to find an email address for whas-isface & direct him here - let's ALL try to do that - after all , if Howard fans don't who will ? Ima start with that vlog -thingamajig in the first post above........

ain't having too much luck so far , hey Terry - any chance you can share that email address you mentioned in your post above for Bassett - or is it privileged info ?

He's got a SK Video Log on that site. ;)
He seems interested in doing an origin story, maybe something best left up to the imagination. I know when kids get crayons, they want to fill in all the blanks. ;)
He also seems to think that SK is one-sided. I'm not an expert on Kane, but maybe some of you folks could politely discuss this with him.

Still no entry in IMDB.

Of course, Solomon Kane is a colonial, is he not? Although I can see how Horrorwood would change his ethnicity...

One of SK's old buddies referred to him as having once been known as "Devon's King of Swords". I think that puts his origin in England, and establishes him as a master swordsman of long standing. As far as English accents are concerned, I don't think I heard a single American accent in "Pirates of the Carribean" I or II.

Howard described Kane as from Devon, but went on to say that somewhere in his career he had "lost entirely the distinctive Devon accent." This is good, because otherwise he'd have to talk like Robert Newton playing Long John Silver. He doesn't say what Kane, having shucked the Devon accen, does sound like. Personally, I'd like to see Liam Neeson play Kane. He can look fanatical as hell and has a classic swordsman's body - tall and lanky with long arms, just what you need for rapier fighting. But at that budget I doubt it will feature any A-list stars.

Here's a little bit of information that makes me cringe,

Simply titled 'Solomon Kane', the film will be based on the Robert E Howard epic about a mercenary who owes his soul to the devil but hopes to redeem himself by fighting evil in the name of good.

You can read the entire article here.

I hope that the above quote was written by someone who does not know the character. Otherwise it could mean bad things about the upcoming film.

Hmm... I don't know about Liam Neeson. He doesn't really strike me as Solomon Kane, but then again, he did a fantastic job as Ras Al Ghul, so it could work. Kane strikes me as an older man anyway, so perhaps Neeson could work. Whoever does it, I hope they channel that singularity that drives Kane, who is no ordinary action-hero. Kane is nearly, if not completley, overcome with an almost rational insanity, if that makes sense. He's a cold vessel of vengeance, with almost no personal characteristics of his own to define him. The closest we came to seeing who he was, was in Solomon Kane's Homecoming, in which Kane attempts to go home. Once there, he is inevitabley drawn back into the darkness of the world, and that incessant and futile quest to right the wrongs the world has wrought.

Hmm... somehow I doubt TPTB will get any of that. We'll probably just end up with Van Helsing 2.

Oh God No.....

There is so much imagery with this character. As a Director, I would LOVE to have that kind of budget and talent working on a REH film.

If this film does tank....Which so far looks like a given, I promise to make another Kane film, one that is almost word for word REH. Should I start planning for that now??

I hope you guys are all sending Bassett emails , I've sent a couple leaving a trail of breadcrumbs to here for him .

- Hows this sound ?;

Hey how's it going . - There's a 'bunch' of Solomon Kane fanatics who are talking (obsessing) - about you , Solomon Kane the character , your movies , hopes/fears of how the character will be portrayed & on & on - on the 'official' R.E.Howard & Conan / Solomon Kane etc. website message-boards . The members there are amazingly from every walk of life you could imagine - Movie directors , storyboard artists , professional writers ,comic artists , modelmakers/sculptors , biographers , scientists , historians , people in the military , etc. & just plain obsessed fanatics like myself who definitely talk in depth about any & all aspects of Howards stories - way more intelligently & complex than you might ever imagine ! - There's an entire fanclub of yours waiting there to be discovered - if you even just drop in & say hello to allay the myriad fears of the character becoming 'Hollywood-ized' . Tis the EXACT crowd that will make &/or break the Solomon Kane movie , starting as soon as they know you're 'one of us' I guess haha . Anyway- there's alot of us who might start trying to email you to just drop in & see what the 'real' Solomon Kane army thinks & feels - Danka - PainBrush@blahblahblah

If you go here:
www.artistlog.com/michaelbassett
.. it appears that you can post a Videolog to the artist.

Of course you can also send a text message.

I'm not too familiar with SK, so I'll let more knowledgeable fans take this on.

A really good Solomon Kane movie would be wonderful! Unfortunately, I can't get too excited until I see the final result. I'm too cynical to believe it will be anything other than a Hollywood-ized version of Kane, completely lacking in the mystery and intrigue that Howard imparted to him.

Hey Dragongirl - you should hit that link above & tell that to Bassett . if enough of us email him he's bound to get curious & drop in , if not become a member here - it sounds like the story for the movie is still in it's earliest stages - maybe we can have some kind of minor influence on how it turns out - for the better .

I attended the REH panel at Gen Con on Saturday, and was told that they just received the Solomon Kane script last week, but they haven't read or given approval to it yet.

I was very happy about everything that I heard on the panel. It was very apparent that the Paradox people are very focused on doing what is best for the REH legacy, not just in making a quick dollar. I walked away very pleased to hear this.

I'm really looking forward to this movie.

Solomon Kane was an English Puritan , so it only makes sense to use an actor with an American accent . doh !

If he wanted to be more true to life. Kane should not only speak in an english accent, he should speak in an Old English Accent.

Try pronouncing each and every vowel (no silent vowels) in this sentence as a long vowel (i.e. all the a sounds as in Crate, E as in spleen, etc...) "What do ye here? Long fallen at my side" It sounds cool as crap doesn't it. Although it would probably be almost impossible to listen to for 2 hours...

Ha, I wish I had 14 million to do a proper movie instead of the few grand I spent on my fan film.

Kane's West Country (Devon) accent probably wouldn't go down well in England, yet alone the States :) I suspect they'll give him a more traditional English accent than that of his birthplace.

Not really (though Wales is only across a short stretch of water and there is a Celtic link). The link below gives a very brief idea of what it's like. The History & Origins, and Characteristics are the best bits. Whether or not Kane would have spoken like that if REH knew how the accent sounded is open to debate :)

I tend to view Kane's speech more like Richard Harris in the film Cromwell. A vague accent (obviously Irish for Harris), but educated in his grammar.

This link is the sort of acccent used when spoofing the West Country... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummerset

It's an English pasttime :) If you go 50 miles in any direction over here you find at least one regional accent totally different to your own. For a small country, we seem to have a huge number of regional accents. Then again, maybe its subjective because I was born here and notice them. I can recognize only a few US accents, but maybe you guys have the same situation. (Do we Brits sound all alike to our former colonies?)
