Sorry about the hand. I love wolves myself but when I got a dog I settled for a Husky rather then I hybrid. The little guy is as wild as a wolf though. Isn't there a new law in Michigan regulating ownership of wolfdogs? It seems that when a wolf growls & snaps at you - you don't swat him on the nose like you do with a 'regular' household type canine.

[ Grizelda gave this classic, priceless, gold ancient headgear to me for my birthday.
Don't know how she got it?
She's been pestering me to show it off to the world for weeks.
BTW, wronged Museum Curators and art-detectives are not welcome at my Tower...

He's an old fart at approx. 10 - 11 years old . He was a 'rescue' animal adopted from a.s.p.c.a. or anti-cruelty inc. or whatever . My bird adopted him just before we got a place together & before I had moved in from my old apartment & studio & stuff on the other side of town . So she had him before I even got a vote , she named him before I even got a vote , & she waited a looong time to tell me it was a wolf-dog hybrid , until well after the pup & me kind of bonded & he was like a family member & more unlikely to be gotten rid-of . She named him ( okay get ready...Hi 'Pinky', sorry, I mean PB.
a specially edited 'Frazetta-in-conan-helm' would be marvelous.
thanks.
i look forward to it when your fingers have healed properly?
[ BTW, don't let 'wolfie' watch you taking a pee...you don't wanna scare him into biting a threatening weapon, eh??]
what name did you give your wolf?
and how many years has he been with you?
" D'Artagnan "
Yep , as in the smartass 4th musketeer . - But I have never called him that - I simply refer to him as "Bud" , or "dummy" , as if I'd really ever be calling out "HERE D'ARTAGNAN , HERE D'ARTAGNAN....." - if he ever got out of the yard hahah . I'd have named him something like "Mowgli" , "Cerberus" , "Carnassial" , "WhiteFang" or something else along those lines . But not 'D'Artagnan' . She has weird taste in pet names - she had named a cat after one of the 3 witches in MacBeth , another cat I wanted to name "Sylvester" (after the cartoon cat - not Stallone hah ) - she named him "Zorro" . We have another wild ass fierce-eyed wolf-dog , a female & much more intelligent & 'nicer' of disposition , but she named the poor beast "Merlin" ( for a 'female' ?!?) So I have my own names & means of addressing all the members of the menagerie
Not sure if there's any new law , haven't heard anything like that - but then again I haven't been looking/listening . Despite myself having been 'stuck' with the hybrids - I definitely recommend AGAINST ever getting wolf-dogs . Waaay back in the '60's & '70's - there was a serious & 'large' concerted effort to attempt to breed back some wolf characteristics into German Shepherd dogs , to see if the 'bad hips' & some few other genetic defects in purebred shepherd dogs could be 'fixed' . It was in the Netherlands maybe , possibly Belgium - I don't remember which country off-hand . BUT the overwhelming conclusion was - "DO NOT TRY TO HYBRIDIZE THEM BACK TO WOLFS !" - they inherit the worst traits of both species "Canis Canis" (or "Canis Familiaris")& "Canis Lupus" , and those folks (scientists/breeders/etc.?) - they promptly stopped ALL efforts in that direction .Sorry about the hand. I love wolves myself but when I got a dog I settled for a Husky rather then I hybrid. The little guy is as wild as a wolf though. Isn't there a new law in Michigan regulating ownership of wolfdogs?
Dogs aren't afraid of humans , and they usually aren't savagely fierce , mean or vicious . Wolves however can get VERY fierce , mean , or vicious ( to other animals )-BUT wolves are shy of & afraid of interaction with humans . Breed them both together & you would naturally hope for the best traits - in a big friendly type hybrid/dog whatever . BUT what almost ALWAYS invariable happens is instead you end up with a very big & strong (look up 'hybrid vigor' - a serious genetic term ) - a huge & 'skittish' wolf that IS NOT AFRAID OF HUMANS ANY LONGER ! & still has that great capacity for 'viciousness' in any type of aggressive interaction - starting as simply as what most folks would consider normal 'house-training' , or 'leash-training' with 'regular 'normal' dogs , but can end up in a crushed hand for a simple swat on the backside for example - kind of like my chewed up hand at the moment ! The idea of having a wolf-dog appeals to some folks , sounds really cool & rare etc. - but you CANNOT - ANY scientist will tell you - you CANNOT breed out the past twenty to thirty thousand years of genetic 'diversion' between wolves & dogs in simply one or two - or even a 'dozen' lifespans of dogs , it's impossible , they are COMPLETELY different animals from each other .
-link of interest to this subject :.......
-----> " Since wolf hybrids are genetic mixtures of wolves and dogs, their physical and behavioral characteristics cannot be predicted with any certainty . " <-----
As far as how close the 2 different species are to each other - even tho both being of the same genera ("canis") , well 'WE' are closer genetically to chimpanzees ( like 98 to 99% the same "hominid" dna ! ) - than a wolf is to a dog !! - No kidding , I read that in some scientific journal a while back & of course it stuck in my brain - me having a hybrid myself . But I don't recall the exact percentage of difference between dog/wolf - so I won't attempt to just randomly put a number on it - it was something like 95 to 96 or 97% (?) I'm sure that data is something easy enough to dig up online somewhere for anyone interested ( which I am 'not' at the moment haha)
OOPS , I better shutup now - we've gotten off-topic , even tho our Sorceress started the topic & it should be hers to ask whatever she wants - it might annoy others with us talking about something not having to do directly with the avatars . - Anyhow , my "painful-painbrush-hand & fingers" are almost on the mend - so I will be able to try my hand at those avatar/s mentioned some posts back . Oh yeah , without going back a few pages &re-reading the entire topic - I do think I recall a question about what program/software people use for tweaking or creating art/photos/avatars/etc. - my favorite ( since it was the first software I started learning digital art on) is Corel Draw/PhotoPaint . It's always seemed MUCH easier to work with & more 'intuitive' in how it works for you , than say 'Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator . It's more "user-friendly" I guess ( hey , I've always wanted to use that term oneday !! hahah - it's official , now I'm a complete nerd computer-geek )

Hey, thanks for the info and amusing tales about your wolfdogs etc.
very interesting and entertaining.
your girlfriend seems like a typical woman: we do think 'outside the box' a lot, in our own nice weird ways; but even i have a hard time understanding the strange 'logic' of about 75% of my female friends ideas...
[ but perhaps thats because most of em are witches, eh??

BTW, i dont mind a bit of OT posting.
label it as OT, and it will be clear and ok.
Ofcourse, i will jump in and moan if there are too many OT posts, and they get on my t#ts.

Hey, have we got a topic about 'Hyborian Pets' [ members pets ] yet?
maybe you could start one with a copy of your superb wolfdogs post?
----
Does anyone use a wolf, or werewolf, as an avatar? [ i seem to remember 1 a long time ago?]

Looks awesome
Nice avatar, Libaax. You beat me to that one
Just a little question on avatars - may I use any picture I want?
I don't want to fuel any stereotypes about rule-obsessed Germans, but I wonder if I have to worry about copyright.

About avatars, I just want to remind everyone of the Avatar Policy in the Forum Rules & Guidelines: Please Read Before Posting thread.
15. Avatar Policy: The Official Robert E. Howard Forum has an avatar policy that requires all members to have a respectful avatar that we would prefer reflect Conan or Robert E. Howard/fantasy. Personal photos, like head-shots, are acceptable. This helps everyone keep their focus on the topics and discussions. We even provide some in your My Settings/Profile section. The forum staff has the right to refuse/delete any avatar for any reason.

Hey, I do adore your new big 'ancient-coin' Avatar.
it is really good art and very cool.
i've seen lots of different Conan and fantasy art on the net, but i have never seen any Aquilonion or Hyborian coins before.
can you please give us more info about the coin-art, and the artist ?

Not quite as well-designed is this real Swedish copper "coin" from 1644, weighing in at a hefty 19,7 kg/43 lbs.

thanks Jay.The coins are designed by Funcom. Three coins are available in the avatar library, Aquilonian, Stygian and Cimmerian, for anyone to use.
and my thanks to Funcom for the 3 Hyborian coin designs. very nicely done.
[ although i don't think Cimmerian clans would mint/cast their own coins? but they would probably use the silver and gold coins of other kingdoms which they had aquired through trading or raiding, eh? ]
but this 1 could be an imagination of the face of Crom?
perhaps it was sculpted by an old mountain-hermit-shaman who claims to be the last 'Priest of Crom' ?
----
that huge Swedish copper "coin" is too heavy and weird.
i couldn't pop 1 of those down my cleavage when i'm going out dancing with the girls !

good idea.
you have sparked my interest in trying more filters and effects on avatars...
i will stir my cauldron... and see what crawls out...

<< Just trying my new 'blue woad' look now.
[ i like to wear this when i am travelling through Pictland and Cimmeria... so i blend in better... but the lusty males often shout blue remarks that sometimes even make me blush...

Any Requests for a very special big 'blue' Avatar from my magic cauldron?

Man, those Vikings were strong! How many could you carry in a purse? If I met a Viking carrying 100 of those coins, I don't think I would tease him about his "man-purse". Do they work in a laundromat? The coins are designed by Funcom. Three coins are available in the avatar library, Aquilonian, Stygian and Cimmerian, for anyone to use.
