Well, we know from no less than Fredrik Malmberg himself that the Dark Agnes film is starting to get going, though still in the very early stages. Last year, Gudrun Giddings revealed that there was a director involved, and that he/she was writing the script

On reading "Mistress of Death," I got the distinct impression that Howard was starting to edge Aggie into the same sort of dark fantasy as Solomon Kane. While I'm of the opinion that Agnes herself is the "Mistress of Death" and not some random sorceress, I do think there's scope for some very, very subtle horror stuff, especially if the film just adapts all two-and-a-half stories.

Of course, I'd much prefer they stuck with strict historical fiction, but if "Mistress of Death" comes into the equation...

I could see Dark Agnes being a comparatively low budget adventure along the lines of Black Death, The Eagle or Ironclad, as opposed to a grand epic like Robin Hood. A $20 million budget would be more than enough, as long as they don't use it all up on actors.

Speaking of actors, anyone have thoughts on possible stars? I'm actually finding it fiendishly difficult to think of someone for our Aggie: I always got the impression that while she wasn't beautiful, she was striking, with strong as opposed to delicate features. Watching Pandorum, I was struck by Antje Traue:

Maybe not Traue herself, but someone along those lines is how I imagined Agnes. I wonder if there are any well-known French actresses who can act, and could portray convincing sword women?

Based on how Red Sonja was butchered, they would probably turn Dark Agnes into some kind of Xena-type

in your opinion, folks, would'nt the two complete stories be sufficient for a script? if not, why?

Unhappily, Tiffany Towers is no longer big-breasted... She reduced her breasts in 2003. :(

At least Howard's story has an in-built origin for the character, so we hopefully won't have to sit through another 'hero's journey' revenge plot.

I'd much prefer a straight historical action movie, but I'm sure they'll cram all that supernatural crap into it and have Agnes fight a random giant fire demon at the end, or something equally as contrived.

As for casting, I thought Rachel Hurd-Wood from the SOLOMON KANE movie would be a good Agnes. Although she may be a bit too soft and girly.

It'd be nice if they could cast a French actress. In that case I quite like Clemence Poesy. She was in IN BRUGES and she's very lovely and likeable onscreen.

That might not be so bad. I have often wondered if Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi might not have read the Dark Agnes stories. She has some characteristics of Xena-but also of Gabrielle who too did not want to be married off and lead a dull village life.
One problem is that, unlike some other Howard characters, there are so few Agnes stories and fragments. So they would have to almost start from scratch.
Quite the opposite from Conan where there are so many stories that would have made great movies, instead of the ridiculous scripts they came up with, especially the Ralf Moeller stuff.
Historical adventure or dark fantasy a la Solomon Kane? Thats hard to decide. I could accept either if it was well done and accurately incorporated the Howard material.

An innocent maiden is trained in the fighting and becomes a fierce warrior woman? Good luck in ever getting a Dark Agnes film now....

As with Van Helsing, once again Hollywood takes a concept created by REH and applies it to a public domain character in order to avoid those pesky trademark laws. Sadly, assuming the mere existence of this film doesn't stop Dark Agnes in its tracks, the clueless public won't know the difference, and as with Solomon Kane, they'll assume Dark Agnes is a "rip-off" of Snow White and will complain that Hollywood is bereft of new ideas.

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.

I think since Snow White is so well known, practically a societal archetype, I wouldn't worry about confusion with a possible Dark Agnes film. Like it said, this was from the producers of Alice in Wonderland who were richly rewarded for their "reimagining", so why not do it again? That said, it LOOKS like a Dark Agnes film should look. But it's probably people thinking "Instead of Snow White being a little shrinking violet, at the end we have her kicking butt in armor" than any taking from Howard (unless the screenwriters & producers are big fans and have Sword Woman in the collections).

My problem with it is a simple one: The chick from Twilight? Fairer than Charlize Theron? Yeah, right...

I don't think it'll be quite as bad: there are tons of kickass sword-wielding warrior women, but not that many badass sword-wielding dudes wearing long coats and Pilgrim's hats. It's easier to mistake one for another when there are only a handful of examples.

My real worry is that Dark Agnes would be coming after quite a few films featuring kickass sword-wielding warrior women, and audiences might feel fatigued. We've had Alice in Wonderland, Sucker Punch, Your Highness, and Thor in the last year or two, and we have Snow White & the Huntsman coming up, as well as Pixar's Brave (you KNOW I'm looking forward to that one) and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

I was actually worried by this topic being so active in the last day or so. I thought what are their news about this so called film. Im happy if i never see Dark Agnes movie. They have already pale Howard adapatations in last two years enough for me.

If its done by a talented director like that guy that directed Valhala Rising/Bronson/Drive i would happy to see it. But not if its d-list creators as usual.

Im happy to just dream about which actress would be the ideal Dark Agnes and never see lazy adapatation. Dark Agnes is a rare Howard heroine, she is holy to me :)

Oh, and don't forget that if it ever does make it to the big screen, they will all be fighting ninja-hollywood style instead of anything resembling historically accurate.

I think I've learned my lesson after Solomon Kane and Conan. After two missed swings, I'm fully expecting the worst unless presented with evidence to the contrary (i.e. announcing that this is a freaking adaptation and not some nonsensical origin story that ignores REH). Gans and company had better bring their A-game.
