Because...
I ran across this name: Edvard Alexander Westermarck (20 November 1862 – 3 September 1939)

He was a Finnish sociologist and philosopher, apparently living at the same time as REH. I'd bet money that his name appeared in one of Robert's books, and he liked the name enough to use it as a place-name.

Looking at the nature of his work, I wonder what DeCamp and the "Crazy Bob" crowd would think... Ha!
Back on topic, I would imagine that that territory/province/region would be rather well organized and stratified - it constantly has to be on guard, and maintain strong localized defences, yet is not mentioned as a source of turmoil or power struggles...

Back on topic, I would imagine that that territory/province/region would be rather well organized and stratified - it constantly has to be on guard, and maintain strong localized defences, yet is not mentioned as a source of turmoil or power struggles...

I have a different view. To me, Westermarck fiefs do not appear as much organized and stratified as those of ''Greater'' Aquilonia. Further, in the ''Wolves Beyond the Border'' draft, certain power struggles seem to take place in the region.

I should have written clearer - I meant this on a kingdom-wide basis. WBtB certainly gives the picture of some local turmoil.
My main idea was that Westermarck, with dangers staring it down consistently from the wild lands outside would bristle with local defenses - numerous small castles, towns surrounded by dykes/moats/mounds, roads, etc., and a well-established plans to quickly respond to raids and invasion.

This might foster a feeling of self-reliance and independence among the Westermarckians, knowing that they had to depend on their own devices; central Aquilonia, even with the best will in the world, would never be able to respond quickly enough to help in an emergency.

In WBtB, Howard calls them Westlanders or Westerlanders. Would the term Westermen be correct as well?

I still haven't replaced my copy of "Conquering Sword". If that's what REH wrote, I'd say "Westerlanders" is the way to go.
