A very interesting review of  The Classic Horror Stories by HP Lovecraft by Jess Nevins.  He does go out of his way to not mention REH, imo.  However, he does attempt to explain editor Roger Luckhurst's reasoning for why HP has not only survived, but "been assimilated by capitalist culture" as well as having literary respectability.

Jess is always interesting to read.  The only reason I can think of not mentioning Howard is it might divert attention away from the point of how HPL survived and the others didn't.  It's not like he doesn't know, if you've ever read his exhaustive and informative annotations of the LOEG books.

In Topic: What Are You Listening To Right Now?

For the past two weeks on the way to and from work, listening to the massive Duane Allman box Skydog. Occassionally, I'm twirling the iPod over to a song I think should've been on the set (just did that for Leave My Blues At Home). On Monday, I'll start the Layla section and probably be done towards the end of the week since there are the long live tracks near the end.

Hi johnnypt

I guess I'd have to say something similar to what REH himself said to Novalyne:

Its only my opinion. You dont have to listen to it if you dont want to.

You're always the ultimate arbiter of your own personal impressions johnnypt. All my comments should probably be prefaced with 'IMHO.'

No problem at all. Maybe I missed something by reading the story without having Conan's reason for being there as part of the mystery. That's on me.

I appreciate what Ironhand put together, it's not easy to do. For the heck of it, I did a script for the Lensmen books and I'm sure if it ever got done, Doc Smith fans would be going "Wait, you left out Chapter 9 of Galactic Patrol? Why?!? And what's with Kim and Cris in the doctor's office, that's not in the book!" Every writer makes the choices to tell the story in a different medium the best way possible. The way I see a story may not be the way another writer sees it. I know the way Brian Wood sees Queen of the Black Coast is way different than the way I see it, but that's for another thread :-)

So after Conan & Belit Go To Ianthe, we'll have one story arc left before the second part of "Queen of the Black Coast."

That means Wood has to cram in:

 - The Sack of Abombi

 - Burning the Stygian Fleet

 - Conan wrestling a Python

 - the Island Kingdoms

 - Amra

 - Ajonga, Yasunga and Laranga

 - Publio

 - The House of Servio

 - at least one example of the Tigress actually engaging in something resembling piracy along the Black Coast, butchering at least one Stygian ship, or anything that would cause the black villages to shudder at the name of Belit

into a single arc. We've already lost opportunities like South of Khitai/North of Hyrkania, the Nameless Continent, South of the Black Kingdoms, the Treasure of Tranicos, Thutmekri, Sakumbe, and more, and now we have to fit in the essentials directedly references in the story into only one arc? Any one of those elements could have made for story arcs in and of themselves.

I will be stunned and surprised if ONE of those things actually shows up.  Abombi was mentioned somewhere in the first arc, so that's the one I hold out some possibility of actually happening.  But this has been an enormous lost opportunity for the gain of two or three thousand readers...for now.  By the end of the year, we'll pretty much know what will be covered in the remaining issues, then we can do the full encomium.

I see DH has eagerly quoted a positive review for CTB #16 at

I've posted art and links for KING CONAN: HOUR OF THE DRAGON to get that attention.  Anyone else want to click over there and continue to push that conversation towards KC:HOTD? ;)

They better hope people don't read the comments. Sounds like a lot of our kindred souls there. I might add on a bit.
