IMHO.

REH´s descriptions are very bombastic and romantic with silk and gold and gleaming steel in not so realistic settings. Maybe you can caputure some of that magic when painting the figurines. To me it would be kind of boring if you just "used vikings" for the Aesir and "Black Prince" for the knights of Aquilonia. I mean why? Then one might as well make a historical game. 100YW for instance...and say, well that is Conan the strategy game. But its not...everybody can see it is a historical 100YW game.

I realize this is a hobby project of yours but I am just discussing with myself here a bit. Would historical gamers buy such a game?..No, I think not because they would probably not like the weird mix of babylonians vs Swizz Pikemen and so on. (I would like it though...:)) Would fantasy-nerds buy such a game? ..No, because they look too realistic historical and not fun with pointy eared elfs and ents running around.

Everybody thinks of eagles when they hear Aquilonia, just as they think of grecoroman mythology when river Styx, Acheron and such appears in the Conan stories. Likewise the other national names, Mitra, Pictland, Ophir even Cimmeria can be said to be reminiscent of ancient historical or mythical lands. But obviously Stygia, Shem and the other nations are fictional fantasyworlds. They might look like whatever,

Obviously he must have read something, something of grecoroman myth even if he just used the names and cared nothing about the rest. Technologywise 100YW is probably a very good place to pick Aquilonian figures from. But no cannon then...

This story will also be told, as the promise he was kingdomed.

The last one there, that Cromsblood quoted. Maybe because the lines are darker and more defined.

No slander intended mate...I just forgot the smiley. :)

I read pikes as longer than spears too.  But if the shields are that big I don´t know about  renaissance pikes. But the closest thing if you pick one historical miniature would probably be something like that. I would listen more to Deuce and other heavyweights on this forum than me, just saying...but here is my wishful thinking and suggestions.

"The host that had joined him, marching down from Gunderland, had not been composed exclusively of spearmen. With them had come seven thousand Bossonian archers, and four thousand barons and their retainers of the north and west, swelling the ranks of his cavalry. The pikemen were drawn up in a compact wedge-shaped formation at the narrow head of the valley. There were nineteen thousand of them, mostly Gundermen, though some four thousand were Aquilonians of other provinces. " (From HotD...battle of Valkia in the endchapters)

As I read it there could perhaps be Aquilonian spearguys and the Gundermen, highly disciplined and trained be the pikeformations? But one could also interpret this as if REH don´t make much difference between pike and spear. I guess it is up to the reader. (shrugging my shoulders)

Personally, I would go nuts and make them fantasy looking. Mixing the figures up. For Gundermenpikes, I would take a burgonethelm-head from a border reiver and put it on a hoplitebody. But give that hoplite a mailed or brigandine torso and paint it as steel not bronze. I would also put heathen symbols, bats and stuff on the shields. Preferrably looking either Frazetta or Milius.

I tried to draw some Gundermen the other day, this is what I came up with. I made their pikes pretty short and with burgonets but with bronzeage symbols on them inspired from the ancient Belgae-tribe.  The triple lions would be for the Netherlands...
