How to describe this, reveling in...hey, at least she liked it, kinda sorta.  There might be hope for her...probably not but have to try to think positive.

That's the feeling I got too.  If she really is a teenager, I suppose I can forgive her.  If not... holy geezus.

I was finally able to sum up my feelings on reading HotD #1:  The rumors of Conan's demise were much exaggerated.

"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

This comic rocked from start to finish, though I had some gripes with the colourists not being Dave Stewart, though that was small.  I read last night in bed and then reread it again, my other issue with the alternative cover.  I just hope the sales are frigging huge to knock the other title into f%^kin oblivion!!   :)

On the other side, here's a fine example of a well researched review:

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.
--Robert E. Howard to Harold Preece, ca. June 1928--

I think it's funny he didn't think he did a good job!  If your review makes me want to go back and look at the way Tomas drew the crown, you've done a solid piece of work.

What I liked best about this is how it actually LOOKS like a hand drawn comic book, and not some photoshop painting.  I hate the way a lot of modern comics look.  Too computer graphic-y for my tastes.

"Some filling in or padding by Truman though still sticking with the original story at best, as any adaptation writer could do in respect of the source material. "

No, I hadn't realized that.  I suppose the preference to drawing should have been a big clue for me.  Great review, Dave!

Thanks guys, first time I have had to do this.  I prefer to draw than write as I can get emotionally charged sometimes.  Though I want this comic to eat all other pretend Conans up and spit it out in sales.  Heading to comic con here in Ireland at the end of the month with some copies of it and a poster from the local comic shop to try and promote it too.   :)

Dark Horse is promoting the following quotes on King Conan: Hour of the Dragon #1:

King Conan: Hour of the Dragon #1

22191.jpg

"After a long, long wait, The Hour of the Dragon has come. And it does not disappoint. Robert E. Howard's only Conan novel adapted by the team who have been making the finest Conan comics for their generation -- King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon is a masterwork." - Comics Bulletin

"10 out of 10. Happy to see veteran writer Timothy Truman return to a more visceral take on the material. The characters speak rich, Howard-like dialogue that is purposefully over-the-top--a Conan story should evoke the 1930s not modern speech. Tomas Giorello keeps the action moving with characters rippling with muscles, flowing robes, and intricate but grimy details. This issue is mostly set-up, but is building to be a Conan comic worthy of the name." - Newsarama

Still have to go and pickup my copies.   B)
