At the recent Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, I noticed a serious lack of EVERYTHING Conan. In the past you could always count on finding some statues, toys and tons of back issues a reasonable prices. However this year there was nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were not toys, no statues, no figues, and most distressing almost no artwork. Granted Mr. Ernie Chan passed recently, god rest his soul, and even if you weren't a fan of his artwork he was one nice and courteous human being. I shared many emails with him before his passing and met him in person twice. What a great guy!  Yet there were maybe one or two artists out of hundreds, that were displaying anything Conan. To top it off these artists were just free-lancers showing off their work, not artists who had done any magazines or comics.

The only support I found were Dark Horse comics had artist Brian Wood present signing copies of the latest series. I'm sure there are many who would like to comment on that subject, if they haven't already.

Lastly, and this probably will make most happy, the price of Conan early issues has skyrocketed!  Last year I was able to pick up fairly decent copies of Conan the Barbarian #1 for $60 to $80 at the convention, this year the lowest I found was $225 and most were over the $300 mark!  Like gold, now is the time to see boys!  LOL

What have you noticed lately in the merchandise area?

Prices for Conan the Barbarian #1 are all over the map on eBay.... I've seen some for sale for thousands of dollars; yet last year I picked up a copy for $40.  It wasn't even in that bad a shape either.  A little worn, but totally intact.

A 1/6 Conan would be pretty awesome. There really isn't much out there for such an iconic character.

I believe, at last count, I had five copies of Conan #1 in varyious conditions. I also have about 13 copies of Conan #3, also in various conditions. I think next time I'm going to take a couple to the con and sell them. As to the statues, there are some really nice one's out there but the prices are just too out of reach for me.

I was at ECCC too. You're right, I didn't see much Conan merc.

Did you get a chance to talk to the Dark Horse guys about Conan?

Zack,

I would be willing to part with one, since your local, and no where near the prices they were charging. I have a soft spot for Conan fans. However it wouldn't be my best copy.  ;)

And no, I didn't talk with any of them. Actually I was a little put off by the way they were distant and non talkative. When I came up to Wood to get the comics signed, there was no one in line. However the gentleman in charge of the line told me I needed to step back and get into the 'corral' style waiting area till I was called forward?  I took two steps back and then waited. About 15 seconds later he said I could move up to the signing table. I thought it was a joke at first, but since he wasn't smiling and Mr. Wood wasn't smiling, I took it as simple arrogance.

Perhaps they were intimidated by your ultra-realistic Conan costume...

LOL, no the one thing I don't do is dress up! At any of the con's I go to  for that matter. I'm just not that 'hard core'. Maybe it's has to do with my body that is the opposite of Conan's?  LOL

Man, I would love to!  But I blew my "buy expensive old comics" fund at the Con.  If I buy one, it would be awhile. I'm a poor man ...

I met the top DHC guys in Madison in '90.

Obviously, the tone has changed.

Wood claims he's in it "to feed his family". He might try and hang with his base on a more amicable/personal level.
