Its a shame that the book this is based on is quite difficult to find but there's some good excerpts on the REHupa site.
Hi. I think that "Donald M Grant" publishers have pretty much had this hb book (One Who Walked Alone) available in print/stock for the last few years, it's also apparently now in it's fourth printing. It could be considered pricy at $35.00 (plus S+H) , but to anyone interested in Robert E Howard (and his characters) it's well worth that price (no pun intended), and should be a core part of any REH book collection.

Are you all saying the CtB movie was actually based primarily on a single book?
I thought it was all made up by John Milius & Oliver Stone (the writers) based loosely on a wide swath of Conan lore.

Danke, Terry. No , Danny means The Whole Wide World is based on the book One Who Walked Alone by Novalyne Price Ellis.

Should've paid closer attention to the thread.

I've amended the link in my previous post to the "D M Grant" site (for the "One who Walked Alone" book) if anyone's interested.

Have you watched it yet? If so then let us know how you liked it or what you thought of it. I have the movie and I really liked it. But I would not call it "sappy". While not some action packed drama or something, it is a true moment in Robert E. Howard's life. My wife liked it as well. While the movie is more or less about the two years he dated that gal, it is a little better than most fluff movies. And a true Howard fan will like the movie. It shows him to be a very human man. I loved the part when they were sitting by the corn field and she asked him about his new Conan charactor. He sort of became him for a moment, and sound effects in the background were sort of neat too.
Take care,

I think I may have worded my post poorly - I meant to say I was amused that it was being compared to sappy movies because it is NOT a sappy movie. I have seen it, just needed to get a copy of my own instead of having to rent it when I wanted to see itBut I would not call it "sappy". While not some action packed drama or something, it is a true moment in Robert E. Howard's life. My wife liked it as well.

I loved the movie as well, and I payed full price for it. But it was money well spent, just for the insights into REH's personality. In fact, I liked it so much I ordered the book by Miss Price 'One Who Walked Alone'. Any little bit I can learn about the (tragically short)life of one of my favorite writers is worth it.
The movie was actually very close to the book, a surprisingly faithful adaptation. I also thought that Vincent D. was perfect as Howard. An excellent choice! Of course Rene is always good.
Cheers,
Jason

Ordered this movie last week, got it today & finally watched it with my little bird, who's never read any Howard , much less Conan . She wanted to see the movie & maybe see why the writer was so important to me . She & I both were pleased to see also that Novalyne was presented so well & in depth , being her story after all.
Tho halfway through the movie she commented to me that "that Bob guy seemed like he could be a jerk sometimes" , I think she was missing some of the bittersweet irony of such a 'verbose' guy who was so crippled sometimes at communicating & saying things in real life , outside of his stories . I didn't pike her head on the front lawn for blasphemy ,haha , I just kept quiet & let the movie play out . After their 'break-up' & then they get together again & Bob finally opens up a little & speaks so kindly , so gently , but it's a little too late , my lady started to fog up a bit . I'm gonna order the book "One who Walked Alone" , but I told her it was for her to read hahaha.

It was interesting seeing one of my favorite writers as seen through the eyes of someone who knew him.
Even though the film is something of a downer (obviously) there are alot of humorous scenes, as well. The scenes showing REH's eccentricities were quite entertaining.
I noticed one inaccuracy. There is a scene in the movie where Howard's mother tells him that she gave the okay for someone to pass along REH's address to H. P. Lovecraft. In reality, REH and HPL were corresponding long before the events of the film.
Overall, I recommend that film to fans of REH.
