How about "Highlander"? The first movie only.

Yojimbo
Samurai Rebellion
The Wild Bunch
The Unforgiven, Pale Rider, and High Plains Drifter (Clint Eastwood)

Two oldies but goodies: Heston in "The Warlord" and Douglas in "The Vikings".

Sorry I messed up. What I wanted to say was I agree with Kirk Douglas in "The Vikings". In my opinion he would have made a great Conan in the 50's and 60's.

yeah Douglass would have made an awesome conan no doubt But we do have Spartacus, The Viking, Lonely are the Brave, The Fury, The War Wagon..etc

Lonely Are The Brave, with Kirk Douglas, Based on Edward Abbey's novel The Brave Cowboy.(Indeed Abbey had some Howardian characters in several of his books, and he was a Howardian character himself)

The Skeleton Key- the setting reminded me of Pigeons from Hell

Glad to see someone else listed Quest for Fire

And how about all those Grade B jungle adventure movies, Jungle Jim,etc from the 30s and 40s?

I would rather go with Beau Geste, Gunga Din, The Four Feathers, The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, the Sea Hawk, Captain Blood, The original King Solomon's Mines, King Kong, etc as vintage films in the Howard mold. Some of these he actually saw!

"The Wind and the Lion" by John Milius, in many ways more Howardian than that "other" film he made.

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.

I think Howard would absolutely have loved LA Confidential.......the Russel Crowe character was Howard all the way and then some..........and the shootouts were mind boggling...especially the last one

Not very Howardian, but I watched Sydney Pollack's 'Jeremiah Johnson' last night for the billionth time. Love that flick. Milius co-wrote the screenplay. The part where Johnson goes to war with the entire tribe has always struck me as a very grim and intense development, well done. It doesn't hold a candle to the true story of 'Liver-Eating Johnson,' though.
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream. - Edgar Allen Poe

It's the olden lure, it's the golden lure, it's the lure of the timeless things. - Robert Service

For the myth is the foundation of life; it is the timeless schema, the pious formula into which life flows when it reproduces its traits out of the unconscious. - Thomas Mann

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. - Norman Maclean

How about Deliverance (1972)? The Appalachian setting isn't quite right for REH, but the conflict between the city slickers and the hillbillies, even the debate between Burt Reynolds' and Jon Voigt's characters, is remenicient of Howard's persistant theme of civilisation vs. barbarism. The whole idea of a civilized man "regressing" to barbarism as portrayed in the film (portrayed via Jon Voigt's character as he hunts down the last hillbilly with a bow and arrow) is quite Howardian, in my opinion.

Good call, jjelmquist!

I'd also note that the gung-ho barbarian "wannabe" (played by Burt Reynolds) is the one who ends up being a casualty of the wilderness, and ends up being cared for by the less experienced "city slickers".

Down here in the South, among suburban outdoorsmen, "Deliverance" is a running joke that will not die. I've never been on a camping trip where someone didn't end up saying "squeal like a pig, boy" after hammering a few beers. :) The reason its so funny, IMO, is because its just a bit too realistic.

What about "The Road Warrior"? Talk about barbarism vs. civilization! This is probably the closest we're ever going to get to seeing "Beyond the Black River" on the big screen. Both are thinly veiled "westerns", with stand ins for Native Americans. In BtBR, its Picts. In TRW, its mutant bikers. Parallels can easily be drawn between Max and Conan. Like Conan, Max is the most capable of battling the marauders because he is more like them than the townsfolk he's sided with.

Very astute, Amster. B) This is a cool thread. :)
