I recall in watching the Whole Wide World that REH was shown attending a showing of the old pirate movie, Captain Blood. I watch modern movies and think that Howard would have loved some of the movies coming out these days. I have never seen Captain Blood, but today, movies like that seem kind of whimsical, though that is all Howard had access to during his lifetime. Here's some movies I think Howard would have thoroughly enjoyed:

--Conan the Barbarian: I am sure there is fierce debate over this movie, but I think Howard would have been pleased with it...I think he may have wanted to change some things, but overall, I think he would have liked it immensely (and the soundtrack to this film! This is the soundtrack for Howard's Conan, in my opinion).
--Gladiator
--Beowulf
--King Arthur (the newer, Jerry Bruckheimer film)
--Centurian
--Cutthroat Island (kind of a cheesey pirate movie, but Geena Davis as a pirate wench...woah!)
--Jurassic Park movies
--Indiana Jones movies

These are just a few I thought of. Any other ideas or comments?

Maybe Bubba-ho-tep,films based on HPL work,excalibur,spartacus,,ben-her,the mummy.
After he recovered from culture shock,he would have lots to watch.
The man loved history,so any thing along those lines.I think he would fit in very well..but you never know.

Yeah, The Mummy...that was a good movie. I recall when watching it thinking Howard would have loved it.

Think he would have liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and Rocky?

Wonder if he would have gotten a kick out of Army of Darkness and Evil Dead, with all the HPL references...

I haven't noticed anyone mentioning these movies, so I'll toss them out for everyone's consideration:

Robocop 2: I think this has definite Howardian elements in it. At one point, he is being controlled by an outside source, much like Conan facing any of the wizards, witches, etc., and is able to overcome that influence by his own strength of will. Also, the ultimate evil in that movie is still very much alive and in place at the end of the movie. There is no "happily ever after" ending. All the hero has done is win one victory. The war goes on, and he'll continue to fight as long as he breathes, but no assurances. The grim, brutal violence as well.

Die Hard: If REH were alive today, and wrote the screenplay for a contemporary action movie, I think you'd get a character much like John McLane.

I wonder what REH might have thought of Enter the Dragon?

I sometimes see Conan in my minds eye as having the speed and musculature of a Hyborian Bruce Lee, but with heavier build and taller at about 6'3". I seem to recall Bruce Lee joking in an interview once 'if I was six foot tall I'd rule the world.'

What about Josey Wales?
“I think the real reason so many youngsters are clamoring for freedom of some vague sort, is because of unrest and dissatisfaction with present conditions; I don't believe this machine age gives full satisfaction in a spiritual way, if the term may be allowed. ”

Robert E Howard

“Do you try to write like the guys who write for the magazines you write for?” Clyde asked.

“Hell, no,” Bob was emphatic about that. “I let them try to write like me.”

I think Howard would have been blown away by Bruce Lee. I can imagine if REH had lived, and after seeing Bruce, he might have wanted to write a screenplay or two specifically with him in mind.

Josey Wales is more of a revenge picture, if you are looking at a Conan adaptation. But with Eastwood in mind, a great framework to build a story on A Fistful of Dollars/Yojimbo. A Few Dollars More Could Work, too, with Conan teaming up with a deadly, revenge-minded partner.

Now, a Conan version of The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly! - THAT would be a hoot!

I'm pretty sure REH would've enjoyed "Rob Roy" with Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange. Great performances from both, good gritty vulgar dialogue ("Would you rather die here with beef in your belly after a good hump, or be taken a prisoner to shit yourself on the gallows?") and a fine believable but despicable villain in the person of Cunningham played by Tim Roth. I like the pithy blurb, too. "He loved one woman. He feared no man."

I reckon he'd have liked "The Untouchables" with Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert de Niro, as well. Three riveting performances and a great action movie. Even if it didn't have much to do with what actually happened.

Other probables ... "Major Dundee" with Charlton Heston and Richard Harris. The old "Thief of Baghdad" with Sabu, and Conrad Veidt as the evil vizier, a villain with real class. And "Gunga Din" with Grant, McLaglen and Fairbanks. I feel pangs of sadness mentioning that one, as it was made only three years after REH's death.

I'd like to see someone make a Steve Costigan movie. Not sure who I would pick to play the lead, but I think it has potential to be a mighty fine movie, given the right director and writer.

The Naked Prey always strikes me as a Howardian story, and everybody in it looks like they came out of Jeff Jones painting. A capable safari guide urges his greedy charges to pay tribute to the Zulus when passing through their land. The idiots refuses and the whole tribe comes down on them, tortures them to death in bizarre ways (one guy is baked alive in clay). Respecting the guide (Cornel Wilde), they turn him loose to be hunted down. One guy being pursued, relying on his wits and skills to survive. Excellent movie with almost no dialogue.

Apocalypto is almost the same idea. I bet he'd love that too as it's even more barbarous.

Rambo IV is the most Howardian thing I've seen in recent years. Conan with a machinegun.
