Love the title of the series, I guess they're going to mine the Lancer/Ace series for a few more titles.  Kind of an odd cover though.  Looks like we do have a new colorist, guess we'll have to wait to see the preview for his approach.

Indeed.  So far, the cover is an improvement.

It is an improvement, considering the crap we`ve been getting in the current series.

Anything will be an improvement over the current series... writing, art, cover.

Not too keen on Conan's apparent tattoos (there could be a story-related reason, I'm not panicking) but the cover is pretty good. Conan looks feral and it promises more action and sorcery than we've been getting.

"It is more than a mortal sea. Your hands are red with blood and you follow a red sea-path, yet the fault is not wholly with you. Almighty God, when will the reign of blood cease?"

Turlogh shook his head. "Not so long as the race lasts."

I didn't take the markings as tatoos.  I thought they were woad.  Haven't seen that on Conan since the first Arny movie.

Digging that cover. Now that Wood is gone, I'll give them another try.

An interview with Fred, the Conan material is down the bottom:

http://www.comicbook...rticle&id=50368

It looks like they changed the name of their version of the Shumballah fragment to Shadows Over Kush. Somehwere, Farnsworth Wright is smiling.

I'd also like to highlight this question and answer, offered without comment. It speaks for itself:

CBR: Overall, what's your general history with Conan, and how does that inform this run? Is there an ideal Conan story for you?

FVL: You know, I had never read a single Robert E. Howard story before Dark Horse asked me to adapt "People of the Black Circle" with Ariel Olivetti. But I quickly devoured them, and fell completely in love. Once I got hired to do the regular series, I read the entire Dark Horse run. There are some great comics in there.

I also really enjoyed Brian Wood's run, his emphasis on giving Belit and Conan equal weight. She'll still be a presence in this book -- how, I probably shouldn't give away for fear of spoilers -- so fans of that run should definitely stick around for this one.

That said, however, Brian is obviously no big fan of monsters and magic. I love monsters and magic, so there's going to ample helpings of both in these arcs. And, of course, the kind of exciting action and swordplay we've come to expect from a "Conan" comic.

FYI, there's 1 lettered & colored preview page from CtA #1 in the PREVIEWS catalog.  I'm reserving my opinion, hoping Dark Horse very soon releases previews of few more pages online, like they did with Truman's & Giorello's CONAN THE CONQUEROR #1 -- maybe with an interview with the artist Brian Ching.

... Or is my reserving my opinion in itself an opinion?  ;)

There's a new interview with writer Fred Van Lente with some new info such as a title change and comments on artist Brian Ching's work at  http://westfieldcomi...an-the-avenger/

Van Lente: We’ve retitled the first story in our run Shadows Over Kush, and picks up Conan at the lowest point in his career, a broken man after losing Belit and the pirate band he sailed with for years. But he doesn’t stay down at the mouth for long, for he finds himself in the capital of Kush, where he’s caught between a scheming nobleman, a beautiful but deadly queen, a horrible creature summoned by dark magic (“The Snout in the Dark” of the title) and Agara, the mystic witch-finder who has the spell-caster in his sights. Agara is an unusual character in the Conan canon, because he’s one of the few wizards Conan respects — even likes.

Westfield: You’re working with artist Brian Ching. What can you say about his contribution to the book?

Van Lente: He’s doing terrific work bringing the world of Kush to live and he has such raw energy to his rendering, the people who dug Brian’s run on the book will really like this.
