King Conan : Crown of Iron" is dead

According to a scooper the project we knew as "King Conan : Crown of Iron" is as good as dead. "The company that own the rights to the character are not allowing Warner to renew them. And will instead look to produce their own movies, lighter in tone and looking for more of a Scorpion King style franchise. Guess John Millius, the Wachowski brothers and Arnie are kicking themselves for not getting it into production sooner".***

If true, I'm speechless. Yet another case of suits being followers, not leaders. Nobody wants to see more derivative Scorpion King garbage, the atmosphere is ripe for the same type of gritty, brutal vision of the Hyborean age that Milius brought forth with Conan the Barbarian....it has been for awhile now, witness the colossal success of Gladiator (much more successful financially and critically than that vehicle for The Rock), but this window of opportunity won't last forever. I'm not saying that Milius and Schwarzaneggar are the only ones that can bring the character to the big screen, but the storyline established by the first and second movies begs for closure, there has to be finality, there has to be that "other story". Just jump into a fluffy Jim Henson's Conan babies storyline and nobody will care, I predict a huge failure at the box office, unless they're very cheaply produced. Either way, the viewer gets the shaft. No, thanks.

I agree on every point. I'd like to bash Milius some more here, but you've all heard my rants before--all I can say is if he'd given the Wachowskis a good script, then they wouldn't have had to give it back to him for major re-writes (shoulda fired him), and the movie would have much more likely to be made. Blame Milius. I do.

But on the plus side, I think it does leave an opportunity open for other things. For example, I don't know how this new Conan game from TDK is shaping up, but I've been thinking about game design for a while now, and I would love to do a Conan game based on Howard's Conan. I happen to think I'd do a good job. I'm sure there are others out there who would also handle the Conan property with some real respect.

I'd also like to see a bunch of short films (mostly short) derived directly and accurately from Howard's Conan stories.

I agree with the short film idea wholeheartedly. Given the success the Sci-Fi channel had in adapting the first few Dune books to mini-series form, I'd love to see them get a crack at it (hopefully they could air it a bit later at night so we might get a wee bit of gore here and there). I think a mini-series of several of Howard's early stories would be an ideal format.

So far Sci-Fi Channel has a pretty good track record (excepting the wacky decision to cancel Farscape). So, why not give them a crack at Conan? As it is, they have several properties lined up, including one of my all time favourite SF novels: The Forever War by Joe Haldeman.

I agree on most points that have been made. Although, I think Milius could do a good job, there are others out there that could do a great job and would try their best to stick to Howard's original idea of Conan: The King.
If they're gonna make it all stupid and campy, just to keep the rating form being "R", then forget it~! Don't waste everyone's time and money!
However, the idea of a mini-series is kewl too! B) Like Stephen King did with Rose Red and The Shining! :D
No offence ot anyone here, but, could we have it on a station other than Sci-Fi? Just to appease Canadians like me! ;) lol

Ah, we just have to wait a bit longer. It sucks, I know... :) It's too bad the Sci-Fi Channel and Space Channel can't form a partnership for these things.

The idea of a series could really work if done correctly. Most of the REH stories are short and would lend themselves well to a 1 hour or so TV episode. However, I don't know how well the Sci-Fi channel, or any 'family' oriented cable channel would handle the violence and (occasional) adult content  . Maybe Cinemax or Showtime might be better suited if the real spirit of Howards Conan is to be brought to the small screen. I still think an animated series (like HBO's "Spawn") might lend itself better to a Conan series than a live action film/series, especially if drawn in the classic Frazetta style. For those familiar with the movie, the animated film "Fire & Ice" from the early 80's is probably the best example of what could be done. While not a Conan/REH story per say, it has the look and feel of a Howard story. Since Frazetta was the lead artist on the film and Roy Thomas, who was a writer on the "Conan" series for Marvel Comics, did most of the script, it's not surprising.

Conan movies should be darker, not lighter, in tone.
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

exactly my point, and i would hate for them to make a lighter, more accesible for wider public movie... if they're not going to do something along the lines of Barbarian, i'd rather for them to leave it alone... i would like to see a movie with AS making his comeback as Conan, and hopefully not anything like Destroyer...

the discussion you guys are having about the KING CONAN
movie being dead, and making the movie more public friendly, is very old news. Warner Bros, the Wachowski bros, Milius and Arnold are all on the project as per current news from TheArnoldFans.com. The script is being or has been re-written, and as soon as the Wachowski bros. are free from the Matrix sequels, they should all be ready to go. Get all current King Conan news from TheArnoldFans.com.

I sincerely hope it's being re-written, because early reports about the plot did not sound like a Conan movie at all. As with the other movies, it sounded like the script grabbed a few names of characters and places from different stories and threw them together into a very Gladiator/Ben-Hur/Spartacus spectacle, with Conan fighting some new character, supposedly to be played by Sean Connery, and with Conan also fighting his son, Conn,
who he handed over to Connery to be trained as a warrior. Why would Conan do this? He wouldn't, and I pray to God they look at Hour of the Dragon or some of the stories from that era in Conan's career before they try putting him on the screen again. I'm all for Arnold, but I don't want to see the movie betray the nature of the character.

I read in one of the T3 mag that it's being rewriten because of the length of it, it said it was 160 some or 190 some. I want to see it and I've been waiting for Conan 3 for as long as I remember.
