"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

The cord to the nock, the shaft to the ear, and the king of
Koth for a mark -
- I remember, The dark woods, masking slopes of sombre
hills;
The grey clouds' leaden everlasting arch;
The dusky streams that flowed without a sound,
And the lone winds that whispered down the passes. -
(Cimmeria, REH)
- Every hour harms, it's the last one that kills -

It has been a long, long while since I have actually finished a project I started. While not strictly Hyborian it IS a plausible weapon. I set out to replicate a sword typical of the Irish in the 1st-3rd cent. AD. Most of the finds that survive have no hilt componenets as they were ususally wood, antler or bone. Some have survived to give an idea of what was available. Dating unfortunately is difficult as the finds are usually river, bog or lake deposits that span hundreds of years. Those finds that have been made however seem to show a distinct consistency of blade shape and design. In particular they are small, many are what we would consider large daggers. The range is roughly 18" to 24" in overall length for the period in question. Here is a picture of mine it measures 18.5" and would likely represnt a junior warrior's weapon as opposed to a chief or chieftain's sword (which would be more ornate).
Very, very nice work.

Nice pics, but the correct plural of pugio is pugiones. Also, the feature she refers to as a "burr" is usually termed a "midrib." Good blog overall, though.
Thanks for the corrections, JMR.

Thanks for the corrections, JMR.My Latin is nothing to brag about, but I did wonder about that plural. I figured she'd read it at the museum and knew what she was talking about. Yeah, I wasn't crazy about the "burr" thing, either. Still, pretty pics!
Wow that was cool, I'd like to see more museum pieces but I don't have a drop on them online.
