Yet again as I am digging through my boxes in the attic. I come upon a great dicovery. A book called "The book of conquests". I flipped through it, and holy crap the art is mind blowing. So I check this guy Fitzpatrick out on the web and I find this: Jim Fitzpatrick
He is very an accomplish artist, writer, and lover of Irelands Mythos. Looks like he had done some stuff for Thin Lizzy too. Check him out. what do you think of his work?

Great art!! Yeah I think I did see some of his work related to Thin Lizzy. It reminds me of Barry Smith....

The guy is famous for having drawn the portrait of Che Guevara and not having copyrighted it. It is to date its most famous piece of art, even if nobody is really aware...

Yeah , Fitzpatricks great , I could've swore it was one of the ones I was listing in the Fantasy art books topic in the Illustrated Conan topics - but I guess it's one of the ones I didn't get to....forgot all about that topic again ! He has another book very similar to Conquests I didn't know about until the Comic-con here last month - not sure but I think it's like a sequel (?) or continuation (?) it was wrapped in plastic & I was already overspent -so I couldn't get it - otherwise Id've got it sight unseen because I like his art that much . Never knew that he was the guy that did that Che Guavara picture !!

" Look for a long time at what pleases you... and longer still at what pains you "
So THIS is civilization ??!??!......

I vaguely remember this book from when I was a kid. Its been with me for a while, I'm kinda thinking that it was my first male look at a womans body. Since the only other way was to break into my Dad's Heavy metal mag. collection, or his playboys. There is a woman with white hair totally naked lying on a bed waiting for Tuatha de' dannon. Anyway his art is awesome, I thought some of the younger crowd here would check it out. I would love for this guy to pick a wall in my house...any wall, and have at it. Although I'd have to take the wall with me if I moved, it would be a hell of a conversation piece.

Jim Fitzpatrick? The original photo was by a Cuban photographer called Korda. I don't think he ever made any money from it, despite it being on more bedsit walls than any other picture in the world, apart from possibly this.

This thread has taken me back: I have many memories of Jim Fitzpatrick's art. About 20 years ago (yikes) I went through a phase of working on Celtic knotwork - he was a great influence, along with a guy caleed Courtney Davis, who I see is well into designing tattoo flash these days.

Just back from the "Days" this mornin', headin' to work. Y'all WOULD start up lotsa cool threads while I was in TX. The book is "The Silver Arm". It's a sequel to "Conquests", the fall of Nuada and the rise of Lugh; basically wrapping up the Irish "Mythological Cycle". Jim's got a very cool website.

Ah cool ! - Thanks for the info - that's the one I saw at the comic-con , if it's a wrap up of the story - does it seem like it might be the last one rather than there being 3 books like Pictishscout mentioned ?

Yes! I remember when I saw the art for Conan #0 I said that the art reminded me of some book of art based on northern mythology. This is the one. Beautiful stuff.

Yeah I have that first book, I like his work. He's done covers for Morgan Llewellyn as well. Finn MacCool and Bard. Wish he had done Red Branch. I got a look at the Silver Arm. Excellent stuff, though somewhat more "cartoonish" than I might care for. The bright colouring and exceptional detail gives alot of movement to his work. I certainly couldn't compare with anything I've done! I would hope that he does a third book. I still have to procure the second book.
- A long bow and a strong bow, and let the sky grow dark!
The cord to the nock, the shaft to the ear, and the king of
Koth for a mark -
- I remember, The dark woods, masking slopes of sombre
hills;
The grey clouds' leaden everlasting arch;
The dusky streams that flowed without a sound,
And the lone winds that whispered down the passes. -
(Cimmeria, REH)
- Every hour harms, it's the last one that kills -

I've kept tabs on Jim's career for 20 years now. As far as I know, he only has two books (wish there were lots more). Seriously, check out his website. Don't know the address; just google "www.jimfitzpatrick.ie".

I was reading on Jim's website that he's working on an adaptation of the Tain bo Cuailgne. THAT should be cool. :)

Hmmm. Looks like you have to be logged in (and maybe Fitz's FB friend) to see the gallery/album. Still, it's not hard to friend 'im. He's a friendly lad. :)

Today is the birthday of Jim's son, Conann (the name was taken from Irish mythology; a likely source for REH as well). I also just found out that Jim has been commissioned to do some artwork connected with 9/11.

Mr. FitzPatrick is easy to friend on Facebook:

Two of my favourite books I owned were The Book of Conquests (1978) and The Silver Arm (1981) which are steeped in Irish myth and lavishly illustrated and illuminated with Celtic knots. Both were stolen from me years ago though I still remember them fondly.
