Finally! Finally! Finally! Crom, it's been a long wait for this news!

Viareggio, Italy, August 2006 - Nexus Editrice is proud to announce that it has entered into a licensing agreement with Paradox Entertainment / Conan Properties to produce a strategy board game based on the adventures of Conan the Barbarian, the archetypical fantasy hero

created by the Texan writer Robert E. Howard. Tentatively titled "Age of Conan - The Strategy Board Game", the game is planned to be released in late 2007. In Age of Conan, two or more players will lead the nations of the "Hyborian Era", the fantasy world created by Robert E. Howard as a background for the stories of Conan. Employing weapons, wealth or magic, each player will strive to achieve hegemony over the others.

"We?re very excited about this deal with Paradox Entertainment. As we?ve done in our previous projects based on famous stories and characters, like "War of the Ring" and "Marvel Heroes", we will take much care bringing to the game the characters, the places and events featured in the Conan stories. We want to create an exciting game faithful to the great tales created by Robert E. Howard", says Roberto Di Meglio, CEO of Nexus Editrice.

"We are thrilled to see a board game based in Hyboria. Robert E. Howard created a world filled with adventure and a board game is a great way of discovering it first-hand. Nexus has a formidable reputation of developing visually stunning games in established universes, and we trust our character in their hands", says Fredrik Malmberg, Head of Licensing and Creative Affairs at Paradox Entertainment.

Two years ago, Nexus Editrice published worldwide the best selling board game "War of the Ring", under license from Tolkien Enterprise/Sophisticated Games. The game has sold almost 100,000 copies and was nominated for important international prizes, being recognized as the best General Strategy Board Game in the 2-Player category by the 2005 International Gamers Awards. In March 2006, Nexus published the first expansion for this game, "Battles of the Third Age", in six different languages. In September 2006 Nexus is releasing "Marvel Heroes", under license from Marvel Enterprises, a board game based on the Marvel universe.

"Age of Conan - The Strategy Board Game" will feature hundreds of high quality plastic miniatures based on original sculptures and a rich array of components, including a big game board, maps, cards, tokens and dices. Created in the 1930?s by Robert E. Howard, Conan has been a hugely successful fantasy character for more than 70 years, with over 12 million books featuring the character sold worldwide and many other productions based on the stories, including movies, toys, comics, TV series and games. Sounds very cool - anyone know what size the figures they have made for their LOTR games are?

I hear ya Kane!

Fantasy Flight has the best games on the market, IMO. Runebound is a gorgeous and challenging game filled with incredible art and true strategy - with a beautiful and huge board (think hyboria!). Arkham Asylum has even more intricate pieces and wicked sweet art and is as challenging a game as any I have ever played. Both games are expensive but their production values match the price. The figures in Runebound are nicely detailed, while the HP game uses cardboard pieces. What really stands out in both games is the art - and we all know - and expect - the great art that has always been associated with Conan and the world of Hyboria.

I would pre-order this baby right now if they let me. I'm really confidant that the game will be top notch and be supported with very cool and unique expansion sets. Literally, can not wait for this one. B) B) B) B)

I sure hope we hear some news about this Age of Conan board game soon.

The new Marvel Heroes board game (available in November) looks really sweet and I wonder if the new AoC board game will utilize pre-painted miniatures too. I see a combination of miniatures and cards like Runebound but it will be interesting to finally hear what direction they are going to go.

I wonder how closely it will resemble the AoC online game - will it have magical healing, guilds and Kuatoa? Will it be like Risk? Or more like a LOTR save the world type quest? Or will it reflect the Conan stories and each player will be off trying to survive and going on adventures? That is similar to Runebound in that there is very little player interaction and that dynamic could really work in a Conan game.

Just shooting some thoughts out there, as I'm seeing the quality and craftsmanship that is being put into these new board games and it's really quite exciting to know Conan and Hyboria is coming up soon. Of course the games are costing $50-$80 but it's worth it for the incredible art and quality of presentation.

Should be great!!! B)

The LOTR game is awesome, I can't wait for the Conan one...
The Snowhawk Clan are traitorous dogs, who play AoC for epeen and leetboi status, and have lost all pretense of roleplay and adherence to lore...

News on the Age of Conan - Strategy Board Game!! Full color map, hundreds of figures, Nemedia, Hyperborea, Aquilonia, Turan and Stygia! November 2007! Cary Nord cover! B)

Here's the cover:

Age of Conan: The Strategy Board Game

Publisher: Nexus Editrice
Designers: Roberto di Meglio, Marco Maggi & Francesco Nepitello
Players: 2-5
Ages: 12+
Playing Time: 120 minutes
Release Date: November 2007
Price: 49.90 ?

Age of Conan is actually an Essen release, but apparently the prototype or a demo will be on display at Nuremberg. Here's a description from a Nexus Editrice press release:

Developed under license of Paradox Entertainment / Conan Properties, Age of Conan is going to be a massive board game where two or more players will lead the nations of the "Hyborian Age", the fantasy world created by Robert E. Howard, employing weapons, wealth or magic to achieve hegemony over the others. Developed by the same design team of the best-seller War of the Ring (Francesco Nepitello, Marco Maggi and Roberto Di Meglio), Age of Conan is planned to be released in late 2007 and will feature hundreds of beautiful plastic miniatures, a large full colour map of Hyboria, and top-level components.

And a more thorough description from the Nexus spring catalog:

The greatest nation of the Hyborian Age will fight at the command of the players, in a strife for supremacy which may have only one winner.

The kingdoms of Aquilonia, Nemedia, Hyperborea, Turan and Stygia will fight with armies, magic and gold to subjugate and conquer, but Conan the Barbarian, the greatest Hero of this age, may turn the tide in favour or against any player, treading his sandals on the jewelled throne of a King or bringing victory to his armies as a mighty General.

With hundreds of beautiful plastic miniatures, a large full-colour map of Hyboria, and top-level components, Age of Conan is going to be the most awaited fantasy game of the year.

Thanks for the info Strom - I am really looking forward to this one!

The company that handles the LOTR games in the USA, and several other board games like this is going to be, is Fantasy Flight Games. Hopefully they will be distributing the Conan one here. The link below shows the miniatures for an upcoming game they have called Cave Troll - they look pretty impressive:

If you look around the site they have the LOTR games and some Lovecraft games too!

FF is great - I'm a big fan of Runebound, Arkham Horror and I just picked up the Marvel Heroes game. One thing you can say about Fantasy Flight is their products are of the highest quality. That has been my experience with them. Arkham Horror brings the Cthulhu/HP Lovecraft experience to gaming much like Runebound brings the fantasy RPG to gaming. I'm hoping the Conan board game will capture the Hyborian Age/REH Conan adventures. We are planning an Arkham Horror session in a couple of weeks and it's gonna be sweet, as we are trying out the new expansion. That is the other thing, the FF games are very well supported with errata and expansions. Want to play a different country than the ones listed for the Conan game? I'm betting there will be some great expansions that will expand nicely from the original rules.

Nice! I have War of the Ring(Fantasy Flight) and can assure that it is is a very high-quality product. I hope Fantasy Flight also publishes the Age of Conan game in the US!

Bad news? Not sure. Fantasy Flight - who all assumed would be releasing the new Age of Conan Strategy Board Game - just released their intended 2007 Product Releases and AOC is not included. Nexus designed the game but like War of the Ring, I was hoping FF would be the company to release the Conan game.

Either Age of Conan has been pushed back to 2008 or another game publisher is going to release it. I was very confident in Fantasy Flight's quality and support. I would rather the game be late then published by another company.

AoC Boardgame was looking at a November 2007 release.

The heck with the game, I'd love to have some of those figures to adorn my computer desk.
