Nope, the Cimmerians ARE Celts, more specifically, Irish; they believe in the Celtic pantheon, and have Irish names. The Picts, by physical description (short brown men) and naming practices, can't be Celts, but if you insist, them they are one of the ancestors of the Scots.

The Nemedians are culturally and linguistically related to the Aquilonians.
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

Well that is the way I felt, although some descriptions of the Picts made me think of Native Americans...but it doesnt really matter BECAUSE this is not our age, it is the Hyborean age, a much better age then todays.

I took the name Nial from Conan's father. It is true that Conan, Conn, Nial and some other names are Celtic in Origin..but I do not see Cimmerians as Celts. I have never seen a Cimmerian with red hair, and I do not recall reading about any. Correct me if you have an instance, and I will check it to my collection.

isnt conan a welsh name?
but I cant remember where I read this but it said the Cimmerians became the scots,or atleast the highland part.
the peoples of asgard and the vanir are norse.
the picts dont sound like the picts in our world, our picts werent really small dark people, nor were they primitive as they are in conans world.
I thought the people of brythunia sounded a little irish.

Conan is actually a Celtic name, depending on where you look it can mean "intelligent","wolf", "wise" and my personal, and what I think most appropriate "gentle warrior"

btw, Did you all know Scotland had a saint called Conan, he has a church bearing his name too... I wonder if REH knew that?

I just looked him up in the lives of the saints and his feast day is January 26, we should take this day for our favorite barbarian and have a drink in his honor. It did not say what he is the patron saint of. If he was anything like the Cimmerian then he must be the patron of pirates, thieves and wenchers. LOL  :D

The Conan I know isnt any saint. Instead of having that drink for Mr. Saint on 1/26, have a drink 1/22 for Mr. Barbarian, Bob Howard.

Holy Crow! :o That is one heckuva church! Well-deserving its name.

Do all kirks in Scotland look like little castles or mini-forts?

There is another thread on the real-world equivalents of Howard's Hyborian nations and people here.

Just today, I was watching a program on History International or something about Roman history and I was very interested to learn that the Roman word for the island of Ireland was Hibernia. It was never conquered by the Romans when they invaded the British Isles. More details here.

Posted Image

I wonder if Hibernia inspired Howard's name for his own world, Hyboria. Much has been said of the Celtic influences in Conan.

Any thoughts?

Did anyone notice the ad on the same page for the bed-and-breakfast in St. Conan's tower? How'd you like to stay there? :)

Oh yeah. That religious vampirism. Na, I'll stick that one out.

Oh, heres something for ya: theres a late night talk show named Conan O'brian. Yeah hes Conan the Cimmerian's decendant ya know. Considering his name is Conan and he's of Scot decent, right? Yeah he looks like a warrior. Probably as much as a christian saint. <_<

ToceroQuijas,

I take it your not a christian then.. dont worry, neither am I :D I wasnt being serious in the first place.. if folks wanna celebrate REH's birthday, some saints birthday or thier cats birthday on any given day then good luck to them, theyre free to do so thats all I was referring to.. my appologies if my form of humour didnt get through to you

O'Brians actually an Irish name not Scots btw.

You gotta learn to chill out a bit.. lifes to short to get stressed out.

I wasnt to be taken seriously either.

Dont worry man, Im cool. This for me is what its all about. In the Hyborian Age this form of communication would be sorcery, but in my younger years as a Conan/REH fan, I would have never thought I would be able to discuss REH with this variety of people & ages as I do now.

Kinda like we are looking into the mirrors of Tuzun Thune.

I mean whats up to Scotland from Texas, eh budgie?

Great information Ski. Looking at the map that was provided on that website it certainly seems feasible to me. A lot of the area shown to encompass what was known as Hibernia relates to some of the places that were mentioned in the other post that you also linked.

I would also like to add that the romans didnt get all of scotland.
it could be he did,he relates alot of his world and peoples to names of our world, like pictland and asgard.
