There was a later run also titled "La Reina de la Costra Negra", starting in 1958 that went supposedly 45 issues, and also quite rare. I've never seen any of those.

I've seen pictures of those before. They ran a couple of articles about them in Savage Sword of Conan. How closely does it follow the mythology of Queen of the Black Coast, and of the Conan stories in general? Besides the obvious blond hair, Conan is dressed pretty closely to the way REH described him in that story.

The first issue? Wild how the artist came up with the fur loincloth on his own, long before Frazetta.

This scene seems to be taken directly from QotBC. I'm curious if the first and last issues, like the Roy Thomas run, are adaptations of the REH story.

Roy Thomas discussed these comics in an issue of Alter Ego.

Figure I had to chime in with my own two cents:

Posted Image

I did have "Savage Sword...Volume 2", but my dog ate it :( and being the completist I am, I didn't want the rest without Vol 2 (or to have to re-buy Vol 2).

I also had to pull together from multiple shelves (comic book shelf, book shelf, misc shelf, etc).

Edit: I suddenly realize I should have placed my framed print of Frazetta's "The Barbarian" in the pic, but it slipped my mind at the time.

I did my inventory this spring, 992 REH items. So now it's long past 1000.

I think my entire remaining non-REH collection isn't over 1000 books. I'm selective in my use of space.

Thanks guys for all the info. I can't believe I've never heard of these. Now I won't be able to rest until I find some of these.

Finally acquired my Conan grail! This is from the same collection as the "Red Shadows" issue I posted earlier.

Picked this one up as well. A great example of why Howard didn't like the way Margaret Brundage depicted Conan. :)

I hope that picture for hour of the dragon isn't supposed to be Conan?

Sadly, yes. <_<

At least Zenobia's kind of cute in a flapper sort of way. :)

I always pictured her with black hair, for some reason. I need to read the story again, I guess.

Yeah I am not a fan of how Conan was depicted in her art either.

I guess it sold the mag though!

If I were a better artist, I would say it would be a cool project to re-create all of the Conan-covered issues using today's art standards. :)

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.

Just pick up a pretty rare Howard item. This a copy of Marvel Tales vol. 1, no. 2, a digest-sized fanzine published in 1934 by William Crawford. It contains the first appearance of "The Garden of Fear" by REH, as well as a Frank Belknap Long story, "The Dark Beasts." This copy is interesting because the issue was printed with a 15 cent price on the cover, but it has some of government (tax?) stamp on it with 25 cents stamped over that. Maybe this one was sold in Canada? Anyway it's pretty cool and I'm excited to have found one.

Some extra info on this book. It comes in two different covers, a white with green design version, with ghostly woman, and an orange with green design with a skull-headed snake. The titles listed in different order on the covers, and the orange and green one includes extra content, including a TOC, a contest, and some editorial content. And, there may be more versions, I seem to remember someone telling me they had a yellow one. Crawford did this book in a print run of 5000, which is a HUGE run for an amateur publication. It took him YEARS to sell these, and they can be found pretty often in a number of places.

I think you're mixing up this 1934 Marvel tales fanzine with the later 1945 Garden of Fear booklet also by Crawford (below). The Marvel Tales does come in an orange version as you said, but both are pretty scarce. The 1945 Garden of Fear chapbook was printed in large numbers (I've heard 10,000 actually, but a lot in any case), is very common, and comes in blue, yellow and (more rarely) green. This is the version that he spent years trying to unload, not the 1934 fanzine. There are ususally two or three on ebay at any given time.
