Still no release date for the U.S.?

I wonder what my wife would say if I told her I want to fly over to Europe to catch a movie?

Never mind, I know what she would say.

Watched the British TV interview and I thought Purefoy did a nice job of selling the film. If you haven't watched the interview, drop back to terryallenuk's link. It's well worth it. The hosts had apparently seen the film and liked it. Or at least said so, which is just as good PR-wise. Purefoy said he trained for four months prior to filming. From everything I have read, Purefoy earned his salary on the SK film. I like the way Purefoy mentioned that Solomon Kane was a British hero. The UK fans need to be reminded that SK's a hometown boy in need of their support. I liked his selection of current UK film heroes: James Bond, Harry Potter, Solomon Kane and Mr. Bean. Heh. Heh.

I want to thank terryallenuk, elysium, eamon, and hollycole1 and our other members from across the pond for keeping us abreast of UK developments. Hope you will keep it coming, gentlemen. :)

That is absolutely the best thing I have yet heard about the movie!

Good interview!

1,5 stars out of 5: “Problem is, we know from the start that he is going to make it, we know who the evil dude is, and we begin counting the minutes that separate us from the credits.. We would love to be moved by the FX, but those of our Playstation are infinitely better. We would love to feast our eyes on Kane’s barbarism but Purefoy’s over-theatrical performance reminds us that we are late for our Christmas shopping…. Bassett delivers an adaptation devoid of surprise and spice of one of REH’s most mythical heroes.

Those French reviews were pretty bad.

And we all know that the ship sinks at the end of Titanic.

That's a very amateurish review. You can tell that he has given no thought to this at all.

That should probably go to the "Solomon Kane Movie Reviews & Comments" thread, though I'm fairly certain Patrice Lunet has already posted all the French reviews over there. Suffice to say, the French really ragged on the film, which provided a nice counterbalance to a lot of the gushing that came out of Ain't it Cool News and from the Toronto International Film Festival. Generally, when a film generates a wide range of opinions (well, internationally anyhow), that indicates it might be worth watching yourself.

(I generally trust "Twitch" for review that gel with my opinions. Incidentally, they gave the Solomon Kane movie a positive review, though maybe not for the reasons I would have hoped for.)

Taran is right, gentlemen. Let's keep the reviews on the Reviews and Comments thread and save this one for news. By the way, Libaax, that review above sounds awfully familiar. I specifically remember that lame bit of opinion, "We would love to be moved by the FX, but those of our Playstation are infinitely better." I don't think this is a new review unless someone is stealing parts of old ones.

Michael J. Bassett posted this pretty cool pic on his website. It was taken by none other than James Purefoy while he was out shopping. I remember Wandering Star fondly expecting to see Solomon Kane on a London two-decker, Well, that day is here.

The motto (fight evil with evil) makes me want to barf. Its the antithesis of what Solomon Kane is about. I've been on the fence about this whole thing for years, taking a "wait and see" attitude, but this kind of thing makes me, as Mark Finn would put it, lose my mind.

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.

As far as I can tell, it's the marketing folks who come up with the slogans, and not the film makers. There's quite a few examples of film slogans doing disservice to the films they're meant to advertise (and, from what I know, the slogan doesn't even match the film itself all that well).

Yes that review wasnt new, it was from when the film was new in France. I was reading an article about the film by Leo Grin in Cimmerian.

Still it was intersting how they were dissing the director,writing....

I'd been on my annual trip to Pitlochry this week, and just as I was starting to get ready to leave, I saw it too! Talk about segueing back to normality.

It was a good interview. Aside from the peculiarity of calling Bob "R. E. Howard" (do we say John R. R. Tolkien? S. E. King? Joanne Kelly Rowling?), Jim Lad gave REH a fair shake. I'm particularly pleased that he mentioned the speculative nature of the film's events, his boosting of Kane as a British hero, and the generally solid biography. Normally I find the Beeb's presenters a bit blase and lame, but Bill & Sian behaved themselves. Good watch all round.

So all I had to disagree with was what to call REH. If only all interviews kept their inaccuracies to such a minor level. B)

I agree with Taran about the promo lines on "Solomon Kane" bus poster. The distributor pretty much calls the shots. I've seen much greater misrepresentations in advertising films. "Grand Torino" (a great film) was pretty much advertised as a "Dirty Harry" style action flick, which it certainly was not. Kane does start out in the film as a bad guy (and yes, we all would prefer that he hadn't), but IMO he does evolve into someone very close to REH's Solomon Kane by the film's conclusion. I thought it was interesting that on Purefoy's TV interview he mentioned the film's financial backers had insisted on an origin story. I am sure it went right over the heads of the interviewers. I think, however, that was his way of acknowledging not all the fans were happy with it.

On the whole, however, it is encouraging to see "Solomon Kane" arrive in the UK with the normal panoply of a major motion picture. Geaux Big Puritan!
