I have been privileged to read some of Howard's poetry. He certainly had a talent for it. I'm wondering if anyone else feels the same, and what you're thoughts might be on a possible book of Howard's poetry. I personally would love to see one, would snap it up.

If you look hard, you'll find a series of posts on this site, by Kane, in which he posts a lot of Howard poems.
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

Not a problem. :)

Glad to hear that you enjoyed the poetry.

Of the ones that I have posted, which do you like the best?

WILES OF A WOMAN
Robert E. Howard

Many broken kings, drifting among the debris

Among the ruins of all the unborn

My vassals lie cold and still

Treachery, and the wiles of a woman

coiled about my soul
For all the works of cultured man
Must fare and fade and fall.
      I am the Dark Barbarian
          That towers over all.

                  from the Outer Dark"

Hi Shrews.

... Shrews Posted:

>WILES OF A WOMAN
Robert E. Howard ...

- Close, but no cigar there matey, LOL.
This isn't an REH poem, but one of the excerpts taken from the REH
yarn collective "The Sowers of Thunder". Being wrought to his own devices, by REH scholar Dr. Charles Gramlich, for his REHupa essay "Robert E Howard: Found Poems".

The piece can be found here, at the REHupa site ...

I was informed of the following link by Issacson, thanks again.
It is the webpage for a group called "Mad Minstrel".
A group whos songs are based on, and uses, the poems of REH.

Hi.

Re: French Rock band "Mad Minstrel".

Just to add to Kane's post: After checking out the site, if anyone has any genuine, associated questions regarding the band's music, why not email "Jerome Chaboseau" at the address given? He's a nice guy and I'm sure he'll appreciate polite feedback from fellow fans of REH/Conan.

Cheers, Danny.

Hey Kane have you ever heard of the collection of Robert E Howard's poems in a print called (Night Images)?

If so can you tell me anything about this print?

Thanks for your time.

Must admit that I have not heared of that book. :(

As time permits I'll have to try and see if it can be found anywhere on the 'net. If anyone comes up with info before me, feel free to post here.

Hi Kane and all.

No worries there Gerald, you're welcome Sir.

If any of you haven't already done so, why not check-out the "Howard Works" (The Works of Robert E Howard) site.

http://howardworks.i....com/howard.htm

It's a good, very useful reference place, as it lists the majority of the Howard books, Mags and small-Press publications etc, including the Poetry vols, their details and some cover illustrations.

Cheers, Danny.

Hi All

Just adding my 2 cents. If you look at the Wandering Star web site it gives a hint of upcoming books, and one is "The Poetry of Robert E. Howard". I've been collecting REH for a lot of years and I have a few volumes of his poetry.

Always Comes Evening
Singers in the Shadows
Shadows of Dreams
Etchings in Ivory
Rhymes of Death

There is another, "Night Images" as stated in an earlier post, but I have not been able to find one to add to my collection.....yet.

Tres cool! Do they have (or need to have) permission to make the poems into songs?

Hey everyone,

I skimmed through the post regarding ReH's poetry (so I hope I'm not repeating something that's already been discussed ) and it inspired me to register with the forum and write this post.

I'm just finishing the "The Conan Chronicles Volume 2 The Hour of the Dragon" and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the poetry snippets that preface the chapters in stories like "The Phoenix on the Sword" and "The Hour of the Dragon". If I had the books with me I'd post some of the key phrases, but I don't :( Regardless, they are simply awesome. I don't know how to best decribe poetry, but the tapestry he paints with his words, and the flow of the verse is fantastic. I highly recommend everyone re-visit a few of these stories and re-read these poems.

Out of curiosity, is there a proper term for those little poetry snippets that preface a chapter?

I've read just right now the REH's poetry cited in this forum by Kane . I must say, that it really impressed me. I don't know the terms - thanks to Crom, I'm no more at school! But you can see, Howard is also a master in poetry. You will agree with me as a men, Matt: there is no much poetry, that interest and impress the men. :D
The Cimmerian made no attempt to match wits and intrigue with Thutmekri and his Shemitish partner, Zargheba. He knew that if Thutmekri won his point, he would insist on the instant banishment of his rival. There was but one thing for Conan to do: find the jewels before the king of Keshan made up his mind, and flee with them.

I wasn't sure where to post this poetic tribute to Robert E. Howard by R.H. Barlow. This is the tale as told by Karl Edward Wagner:
Note: The Eyrie was Weird Tales letters page

Red Nails ran in the July, August-September and October 1936 issues of Weird Tales.  Howard's suicide was on June 11 of the same year, and the August-September issue carried the notice of his death.  The Eyrie reflected the readers' admiration for Howard and their stunned sense of loss at his death - even as the final Conan tale thundered on to its gory conclusion.
Red Nails ended halfway down the page.  the remaining space of Weird Tales, page 535, bore a sonnet:  REH, by the gifted R.H. Barlow:

"And as of mythic kings our words must speak
Of Conan now, who roves where dreamers seek."
