There were no such blunders made when Rusty and Marcielo put together The Ultimate Triumph. Hell, Rusty and Marcielo, neither of whom had extensive experience in putting together art books (unlike Underwood and Fenner), were able to masterfully match up Frazetta art that was never intended for the the stories/poems it illustrated.

Marcelo had to do all that art direction without any help from me. But then, he was an artist who got into video and film production before turning his hand to book design. I think that's probably one reason artists enjoyed working with Marcelo: he understands art both viscerally and intellectually, and he particularly seems to enjoy coaxing an artist's best work from him, and then (this may be the film stuff) looking for the best way to get an interplay between text and visuals. I think the books he produced will stand the test of time. It was certainly an honor for me to be able to have a role in them.

I would contact Brom directly - a quick goggle search and this was the first link:

Brom

Good luck.
"Fool!" roared Kirowan. "Do you think he could take the souls of innocence? That he would not know they were beyond his reach? The girl and the youth he could kill; their souls were not his to take or yours to give. But your black soul is not beyond his reach, and he will have his wage. Look! He is materializing behind you! He is growing out of thin air!"

Does anyone understand why Mr. Fenner wrote such a terrible intro? I went to one of his websites Underwood and there were a lot of books on Frazetta and a few on Jack Vance but not one of REH's. That says a lot. Mr. Fenner can't see the forest through the trees and has blinders on. My mom once told me if I couldn't say anything nice about someone then don't say anything at all. Instead I returned it to Barnes & Noble and got a Del Rey REH book to add to my collection. If I saw this book in a dollar rack I'd purchase it and tear out the intro and highlight the front cover, err I mean blacken out the front cover. :P

I say Hanlon's Razor, personally. Fenner, in his arrogance, assumed that his general dismissal of Howard was appropriate for an introduction, as well as something that accurately reflected the prevailing opinion of Howard's writing. It seemed to be more of a Frazetta book than a Howard one in his mind, too. Certainly, he seems to ascribe to the problematic "Frazetta Made Conan" notion. I think it's kinder to assume he's stupid rather than deliberately malicious.

I wouldn't say he's stupid either. He's strongly opinionated and certainly seems to be a literary snob. But worst of all he has many of the basic facts wrong and makes a totally unsubstantiated claim regarding Wright's editorial input regarding Howard, and also about REH "manufacturing" his "he-man" persona. Weird nonsense. He's certainly entitled to his opinion. We were all glad to respond to it by NOT buying the book.

Which makes his actions stupid. If nothing else, it's just bad business sense to say the things he says in a book's introduction.

Indeed. "Memory" is still on the shelf at my local Forbidden Planet, while the REHs are steadily going. I guess even the troglodytes of Glasgow know better. B)

Other than anecdotal evidence, do any of the devotees of this fine forum have access to hard figures/facts regarding how well "Bitter Tree" has sold so far?

No hard facts, but here's a list from amazon.com of the best selling Robert E. Howard books: http://www.amazon.co...hrsr_b_1_5_last

It makes sense that so much SK stuff would be near the top with the movie coming out, so the list might be semi-reliable.

Don't forget that the Solomon Kane book was the first Del Rey to come out, so it has the longest sales history, too. I know it has gone through multiple printings.

I'd think Howard Works would have a pretty good one. :)

I guess he isn't looking for the cover (which can be found easily) but for the painting.

I have to admit I don't particularly like the Brom painting.

Is it just me?
