More nice work, Ben. B) The dog's a nice touch. The historical Picts were noted for their war-dogs (though REH never mentioned any). Keep 'em comin'. :D

i just recently found out that my girlfriend's last name is of pictish decent, which i thought was awesome! these are great paintings, i love the contrasting colors between the cloudy sky and the reddish heap of bodies bran stands upon.

my band is looking for an artist to paint the cover for our second album (which we plan on releasing sometime late 09). You said that you have an easier time portraying Bran Mak Morn than Kull or Conan, but i was wondering if you would be interesting in trying to paint a cover for us. it would be of the cimmerian raid on Venarium. our band is called Hexen, and we play traditional heavy metal with mostly fantasy/medieval themed lyrics. our second album will be called "Invasion", with the title track being about venarium. let me know if you're intersted!

either way, keep up the good work

That's fantastic, Cimmerianwarlord! Could you tell us a little more about your band and your music? I wonder, if your material is safely copyrighted, if you wouldn't mike printing a few of your lyrics on the forum?

yeah sure. our name is Hexen as i said, we're located in new jersey, and we just recently released our first full length album titled "Dark Crucible. its only for sale online at the moment.

you can check out some of our stuff at our myspace page: Http://www.myspace.com/hexenband

these songs are all from our first album, though we have roughly 4 albums completely written. im the lead vocalist/lead guitarist/main song writer. here are the lyrics for "invasion"

Hexen- Invasion
copyright 2007 Kenneth Allen Burdge III

O'er the wall our hoards shall come
invading from the north
screaming out for swift revenge
we'll drive the bastards forth
froth now drips from madened lips
that scream "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS"
severed limbs fall by the score
our enemy's blood is shed

chorus:
unite to drive them from our land
with sword and axe in hand
we shall send them straight to hell
now Cimmerian bloods been shed
we cry for revenge
Crom shall smite the infidels

splinters fly as axes crash
our eyes burning with hate
our maces clash like lighting
searing earth to seal their fate
we light afire the fortress
to cauterize our land
the bastards flea as cowards
but we slaughter to a man

the borders of the shining kingdoms
east and to the south
shall push in all directions 'til
they burn each other out
they come to kill our tribes
with a burning iron hand
but they'll not kill our spirits
and never take our land

and here's one that will probably be on our second or third album that i wrote about "The Dark Man" story, i only have a first verse and chorus so far, and even those are in the works. the music is very cold, midpaced and atmospheric. i wrote the music first, and the whole piece reminded me of the sea, the feeling of cold saltwater being sprayed in your face, and an urgent feeling of revenge. tell me what you think so far

The Isle of Tears
Copyright 2007 Kenneth Allen Burdge III

see the light gleam through the trees
glisten on the frost
the early morning sun shall arise
to guide my holocuast
the wind shall blow to fan the flames
that burns within my heart
the sons of thor shall not escape
my reckoning now starts

chours:
across the sea
lie my enemies
on some nameless shore
god please guide me
my cold Dalcassion steel
shall spring a crimson flood
these bitter winds can?t cool
my burning irish blood

(..) i was wondering if you would be interesting in trying to paint a cover for us.

Wow, that would be pretty cool! Many thanks for the implied compliment!

I'm afraid I'm too busy right now to commit to such a project... I wouldn't want to do a rush job or anything, and work has reduced my drawing time to almost nothing. There are pretty good artists around here, though; maybe you could ask on the "Illustrated Conan" board.

Good luck with the band! Howard would have enjoyed your lyrics.

hey C.W. pretty cool brutal lyrics man ! Very visual inspiring tone also . If you aren't in a super-rush to get a cover painting I think I'll try my hand at it for ya & maybe send you or post up a couple sketch ideas & see if I could paint or draw something decent for you . I've got a few different irons in the fire right now , & don't get but an hour or two here & there to spare which I usually waste away reading the boards & checking out all the links & stuff on these forums , but things are slowing up a bit for me since the cold weather so i might end up with a bit o leisure time . I don't really have any photos to show yet of much of my serious stuff on my computer , tho i've posted some of my goofy off-the-wall humorous stuff here & there on this forum . a couple are on my profile-page , but don't judge my art yet by that digital stuff ( drawn with a mouse-clicker!), I'm practically a neolithic primitive artist - I actually have to have some paper or canvas & pens or paint to work with . I know - it's like cave-painting in this day & age of quick-churned digital 'art' (....he said with a *sneer* of contempt......) When I have a little free time ( & feel adequately creative ) I'll sketch up some stuff for you to maybe consider .

here's something i did decades back when I was still in high school , copyright 1985 (?) I think it was ? ( not a good reproduction tho..)......

That's darn cool, Painbrush! I'd love to see more of your recent stuff. (I assume you made your avatar yourself?)

Thanks R. , i'd show more of my good stuff if I had any already scanned or photo'ed on my comp. but I usually work a lot larger than 9x12 (which is the size of my scanner) & my current digital camera is just a cheapy which makes anything with detail look like crap -so nothing decent on my comp. to share yet . Yeah that avatar is the face off of the color-sketch for a larger painting I'm doing based on Darrel Greenes cover for Conan t/Swordsman (re-imagined) . I haven't been able to find a print of that cover since 1980 !! so I decided to re-paint one myself , but again , that's on a 2 foot by 3 foot wide canvas I can't scan , so until I get a better camera ( soon , maybe after the holidays) - that's it . I'm hoping to come up with something decent looking for CimmerianWarlords band maybe , I've always enjoyed doing art for albums & I have to say I thoroughly love the genre/subject matter of his song lyrics and that's the first step in doing any kind of good artwork , is inspiration .

that's a very good drawing painbrush, yeah definitly send me any scans of your stuff i can check out. we're not on a tight time schedule at all, we just released our first album recently, and as of right now it's only for sale online. we want to try to have our second album recorded by the end of 09 if possible. until then we're going to search for a good record deal, but we'd like to try to have the album artwork done before that of course. if you want, you can send stuff directly to my band email

Great , i'll see what I can come up with , hopefully something that your band'll like & be able to use . ~ Danno

hey , I found the one scan I had of the pic I used for my avatar , it's just a crappy quick study sketch to work out the color scheme/composition etc. that I used to work from for the better large-size oil painting (which i still haven't finished - have to kick myself in the butt sometimes to get motivated when i'm doing art just for myself ) It's my take on a lean-mean 'gaunt' killing machine Conan . hahah .

The avatar pic over there <---- is a little different & more detailed than whats in this sketch below , faces/portraits are the hardest part of any figure/people I draw or paint so I have to work at it a lot to get the exact look i want . The avatar pic. has him looking straight at you instead of looking off to the side like this one is , and I made his snarl a little more mean & intimidating looking in the avatar , & played around with the lighting/shadows etc.

awesome painting! that's the exact style i want for our album cover. what i want bassically is a scene of the cimmerian uprising over the aquilonian outpost of vanarium. i want the cimmerians to be distinctly celtic-looking, and the aquilonians to be reminiscant of medieval french (thats the image i always got of them from howard's stories). i'm not sure however, if i want a somewhat far away view, or a more intimate view of the scene. i've just always pictured our album covers as looking best with something Frazzetta-esque. so i guess interpret that as you will
