Then this one, from Kings of the night. I tried to make Bran look a little more classical-looking than his fellow Picts, but he ended up looking a bit like Kull. Oh, well. First a B&W sketch...

Then an acrylic version (minus the crows, which would have probably made the piece too busy).

Somehow I find Bran a better subject for paintings than either Kull or Conan. It must be the character's moody aspect.

These are all REALLY good! That acrylic one would make a fine book cover. :)

Hey Raider! Firstly, I'd just like to say that, overall, these pieces are GREAT. B) The composition, the draftsmanship, all very nice. Any quibbles I might have don't detract from that, whatsoever. I like the look of "brooding determination" on Bran's face. Also, to me, you did a great job of suggesting the "ironness" of BMM's crown.

Hey Raider! A well-wrought, dramatic piece. You could call it, Legio Delenda Est (or something). Personally, I think at least a few ravens (they were everywhere when I was in Scotland and Ireland) would be cool. Also, it seems, to me, that the Jewel of the Morni is a bit small. In this case, its red hue would compliment the tones of the the rest of the painting, IMO. Great job! B)

Wonderful pics! This is REH's BMM! :D This is the manner all draftsmen should portrait, not only Bran Mak Morn, but also Hyborian Age's Picts - without portrait them with those apish and/or non-European features shown in most of the Conan's comics stories where the Cimmerian wanderers among Picts.

That is really, really good.

Really, really superb stuff. Great composition and execution. I'm wondering though, maybe you've tried, could there be a little more light on the face without messing up the balance? I wonder where the light on the broken standard is coming from and could it be used to illuminate Bran's expression of contempt?

The face is a bit clearer on the original (I had a hard time with the camera!) but for the standard I'm afraid I messed up a little. It really should be darker, but I didn't manage to pull it off so it looks kind of flat and artificial. I'll try to do better next time!

Thanks for the comments.

Hope you don't get mad at me for taking liberties with your art Raider , this is the exact kind of stuff I've been working at getting better with lately , like tweaking the gamma settings of pictures , adjusting & varying rates of contrast/brightness-darkness/intensity/hue etc. etc. Just a few small adjustments here & there can completely change the appearance of art and/or photographs etc. etc.
It's interesting to see what just a few small adjustments did for transforming the look of your great painting Raider . Sometimes reducing the size of a pic distorts the color balance/intensity & the overall 'tone' of the work , I guess I mean how a brilliant landscape like yours gets really dark when it gets compressed down , & lots of detail gets 'washed-out' in the darkness . If it bothers you that I tried tweaking your picture - let me know & I won't mess arond with any of your pics in the future , it's just that when I see great art that loses a little in the translation ( meaning real art mashed down into digital form ) - thats the exact kind of stuff I'm trying to learn how to adjust & improve . I've long ago ran out of any of my own artwork that I had pics or scans of on my comp. system to work on , so sometimes when I see great stuff like your painting I get inspired & it's a perfect way to keep trying to learn - when you pick up someone elses artwork & work at it - it's like 'borrowing' a fresh pair of eyes or something , you see someone elses point of view in what they've drawn or painted . But like I said - if it bothers you let me know & I'll delete it all & won't mess around with any of your art in the future . & Oh yeah , I guess I'd also stop selling copies of it on Ebay too , I've already sold about 3 dozen posters of that painting of yours , signed & numbered by 'me' .

hahahahah , don't shoot !! That's just a joke ! I of all people greatly respect other folks artwork ( of 'any' form or type) & always make sure to give credit where credit is due & praise good art when I see it . If we don't study the things that make other folks art so great , how can we ever improve our own works & points of view .

heres your original.........

I'm reading The horror tales of Robert E. Howard, and although that's the fourth time I went through worms of the Earth this year, I don't get tired of it.

Bran and the Picts are just a great subject.
