Oh man I love the $0.25 bins. I have found some great comics in those. They sometimes aren't in the best condition, but they are great for readables!

Violet Books article

An interesting article about the popularily of Tarzan in Israel, of all places. But that's not the most important part. Check out the annotation on the bottom:

3. Omri Schwartz, at the ERB newsgroup where I first "met" Eli, added this comment: "Along the same line, there are Conan novels that were published in Russia, completely unauthorized, & never translated into English."

Russian Conan novels. The mind boggles. I assume his Kozaki period would be heavily emphasized. B)

Does anyone know anything about these?

One reason Tarzan may be popular in Israel because of Burroughs' critical treatment of most of the stereotyped arab characters in that series.

I recall giving an archaeologist a Tor Conan paperback while I was in Israel about seventeen years ago. She appeared interedted in the map. Don't recall which one it was or how it even relates to this post. Guess I'm hjust talky and needy of attention tonight.

This page has info an books published in various languages. There are several in the Polish section that are not available in English - wish they were, might be fun to read a new pastiche. Lots of cool covers too!

korak: Could be. There were dozens of unauthorized Tarzan pastiches in Israel and in some of them he's helping to defend the country against invasion. Not that they needed his help during the Six Day War . . .

Winterghost: Maybe she was interested in all the names from antiquity Howard had cribbed in creating the map. :D

Yeah, I recall the book took place in Shem, and after looking at the map she said that Shem would be Israel.

Yeah that ones a given . If she'd read a handful of Howards Conan tales she might have taken some offense at his 'generalising' of the racial type 'hawk-nosed Shemites' & I don't remember exactly which one of his tales he mentions something along the lines of there being no profits to be made trading with the men of Shem . - Although compared to some of his less kind 'generalisations' of other races/cultures - that's actually not too bad .

" You have a good point there,...put your helmet on & no-one will notice it ."
" Look for a long time at what pleases you... and longer still at what pains you "
So THIS is civilization ??!??!......

ERB's Tarzan novels are pretty popular all over the world.
There are many that don't even have any Arabic characters in them.
Anywhere you have real men who appreciate real heroes you are gonna find Tarzan and ERB fans.

I just found out that there is going to be an Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars mini-series adaptation this summer, and I was wondering if the art is going to be any good. Does anyone know the artist, or if this cover is by that artist or Frank Cho? I am not up on all the youngest latest comic artists, and I am not too familiar with these names. This cover (scroll down to the right comic on the page) looks okay but it very cartoonish:

That's definately Ted McKeever. Frank Cho is famous for his beautiful women. If you can, check out his website www.libertymeadows.com
-The new Burroughs comic looks awesome! I can't wait to check it out!

Yep, his art is, how shall we say it, stylized. Not sure if I'm thrilled with it, but it might work. I'd prefer something like the Michael Whalen Ballantine covers, but you take what you can get sometimes.

>>The new Burroughs comic looks awesome! I can't wait to check it out!<<

I'll definitely give it a try out. Here's also hoping Mr. Favreau doesn't get distracted by the Iron Man talk and concentrate on John Carter. If he doesn't get it right, I've had a 3 hour epic version in mind since 1983, I'm willing to pick up the slack

IDW is by no means cheapo and the books they put out in my mind are pretty decent.

IDW does a lot of TV properties it seems. They also did the recent Grimjack stuff for Tim Truman and John Ostrander. They did a nice job on that comic in particular, not really familar with any of their other stuff.

Looks like the A Princess of Mars comic by Dan Taylor with art by Ted McKeever and covers by Frank Cho and Mark Wheatley has been cancelled. This was up on Mckeever's website for awhile:

McKeever wrote:

The Princess of Mars project is now officially dead in the water. Two covers done, and the first half of the first issue completed, and word comes that IDW has decided it best not to continue with the project.

It has not been, needless to say, a very pleasant time for me. IDW has been totally gracious and forthcoming without all the legal mumbo jumbo , in telling me to halt all work, so I didn?t waste anymore time than I already had. Frustrating? Yeah. Creatively stunting? Definitely. Enough to cause me to fall apart completely? No friggin way.
