An update on the Eisner Awards at Comicon from MWK:

"I was honored at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con Eisner Awards last
night (well, an hour or so ago), by being inducted into the Eisner
Hall of Fame (along with Dick Giordano, Mort Weisinger and Steve
Gerber)

Michael"

Congrats!

Congratulations indeed! A well deserved honor by one of the all-time great artists. Thanks for the update deuce!

Just found out that Mr. Kaluta did the cover and a story for the newest issue of Creepy.

Also, he wrote the intro for Sandy Plunkett's new art book.

i'm sure i've said this before but I loved his stuff on marvel, especially those king conan covers.

"Our basic purist premise:
ROBERT E. HOWARD, ENTIRELY ALONE, WITHOUT ASSISTANCE FROM ANY OTHER PERSON, CREATED THE CHARACTER CONAN OF CIMMERIA. NO OTHER PERSON OR PERSONS SHOULD BE INTRUDING THEIR WORK INTO THE VOLUMES OF HOWARD'S CONAN STORIES.
In essence, we believe that the work of any creative artist -- writer, painter, illustrator, musician, what-have-you -- is a unique expression of an artistic point of view. It should not be appropriated or altered by others without the artist's consent. No other writer has Robert E. Howard's unique point of view, and no other writer knows what Howard would have done with his character had he lived. Upon his death, his canon, the expression of his artistic vision, became fixed. Tampering with it now is desecration."

Hey there... I just wanted to give you all a BIG Mea Culpa from me for dropping the ball here on the Forum... I appeared and then disappeared... but MAN, I finally get back to find you've all been keeping the plates spinning. I'll be coming back regular from now on...

Before I go Back To The Beginning (2009 on the Forum), let me mention New Work for later this year... the most exciting for me, though not REH, is certainly in the same Vault Of Honor: I'll be doing a cover and 16 interior illustrations for Edgar Rice Burroughs' PRINCESS OF MARS. It's not Film-Related: just an illustrated edition of the novel. One promise: my Barsoomian Women will be Barsoomian... crimminy: I did an image search on Thuvia and it looked like Mars had been attacked by Jessica Rabbit (not a bad thing in her own context, natch!). I've teased Frank Cho about what egg-bearing peoples might NOT have in common with Comic Book Heroines, though he does it so damn well... and, of course, I mostly tease anyone I can when they give Dejah (I call her "Dejah") and her daughter and her daughters-in law, navels... but I've had to draw my brakes on chiding others putting Staircases on Mars. Having just reread Chessmen I was reminded that Ghek the Kaldane's entire country uses Staircases for the Rykors and that, in mentioning their rarity, it was put forward that the ramps that are a main feature on Barsoom are more the rule in the older cities. That opens the door, if I may, for the maybe-staircases scattered about Barsoom, ready to be painted into the background of even a Frank Frazetta painting :)

In tandem with the ERB book, I'm working up an expanded version of Thea von Harbou's METROPOLIS: about 26 new drawings to be included with my earlier efforts, new cover, etc, this time all to be printed in color.

I ALMOST got to illustrate (well, do a Comic Book Adaptation of) one of Robert E Howard's spooky stories: Wolfshead, but that project sort of disappeared.

Though there's "news" of Other Things, most are hanging fire right now (one in particular) so I'll wait to mention them.

Thanks for still being here...

Michael

:D I can't express how cool it is to have you back, Mr. Kaluta. B) The news about APoM is absolutely AWESOME. If there's another artist out there with your combination of sheer talent and knowledge of the source material, I don't know about 'im. Can't wait to see the expanded Metropolis as well.

Too bad about "Wolfshead". :(

Stop by any time, MWK. :)

I've not read A Princess of Mars, but this news inspires me to get this edition. I see its currently listed on online book stores to be available in May.

Had the brief pleasure of working with Michael during the 2005 JOHN CARTER OF MARS film being directed by Kerry Conran. Man, I couldn't wait to see what Helium or the ships would look like with his stylistic touch! I was focusing on the weaponry and the brutal fight designs so it was exciting to think about how all the artists' interpretations would eventually mesh.

The two days spent in company with Kerry Conran's Princess Of Mars Team at Paramount (Hey Rafe!) is a treasured memory... and I expect my fliers, at least, will look in the book as I wanted them to look in Kerry's film. (There were about 20 of us around the table: almost all Big ERB fans: one of the Fun Treats: we each got to say ONE thing "ERB" we thought HAD to be in the Movie: not that'd it'd matter in the long run: as Kerry said: "all this is fine, but if Paramount gives the Green Light, THEY'LL tell ME what to put in the movie, who will star, etc: the best we can hope for is to try to sell them on "our" vision before the money arrives")

My pick was: the Fliers HAD to have Propellers, no matter the extra cost.... hahahahah!

I was sorting through the pitiful remnant of my comics that survived the Flood when I stumbled on this MWK cover:

Also, I found these three with google:

ALL of the art (chapter headings to paintings) from Swords of Shahrazar, which is, without a doubt, one of the finest REH illustrated books EVER.

I love these. This one in particular has been a long-time favorite of mine. There's so much going on that you can just get lost letting your eyes rove back and forth over the picture. Plus, the sheik looks like Anthony Quinn's Auda in Lawrence of Arabia.

Thought I'd re-up this thread with a great scan of MWK's epic cover for The Official Handbook of the Conan Universe.

Here's the link:
