Hi guys

Conanmovieblog said:

Interactive interview with Marcus Nispel the Conan Director

It is time we take matters into our own hands and in true Conan spirit, we have decided that we need to ask The Man Marcus Nispel himself, the questions that matter the most to us! We have absolutely no idea if this is gonna work, or if anyone will answer our humble request at an interview with the new director of the Conan Movie, but sometimes in life you have to be blunt and simply ask

But since even we are not without fault (certainly not), we wanna take your input on the matter and collect the questions from you, the Conan fans, the REH fans and create some kind of an interactive interview. We will collect questions for two weeks and then combine them together to create a neat and clean interview to send off to the powers that be, in hope to get a response to them.

So if you have an important and well versed question to throw into the pot, don’t hesitate, chop off the kings head and take the crown, so to speak, post it in the comments of this newsposting OR in the thread on the official Conan forums.

May Mitra guide your questions or Croms wrath hit you, if you post nonsens!

I am going to start with one suggestion:
  • Did you read the REH Conan stories, and if so which one is your favorite story.

Cheers,
Waldgeist

What are your thoughts on the previous Conan films? What did you like or dislike? How do you intend to approach things differently?

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.

What guidelines for the the actor who portrays Conan would you give to your casting director?
A wild moon rode in the wild white clouds,
the waves their white crests showed
When Solomon Kane went forth again,
and no man knew his road.

If Robert E Howard came thru a time warp, would he approve of the script? The actor? The "feel" of the whole movie?
"Know, O Prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars--Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyperborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingaria with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom in the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west. Hither came Conan the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a SLAYER, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet."

....."let me live deep while I live , know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate , the hot embrace of white arms , the mad exultation of battle when the blue-blades flame and crimson - and I am content. Let teachers priests and philosphers brood on questions of reality and illusion . I know this much ; if life is an illusion , then I am no less an illusion , and being so that illusion is real to ME .I live , I burn with life , I love , I SLAY , and I am content . "

What are your thoughts on the REH themes ("barbarism vs civilization" and "existencialism")?

I would like the movie to be true to REH’s vision. However there are aspects from the Milius film that I love, such as the soundtrack. Basil Paledouris’(RIP) music made the movie succeed in many ways.
My question is are you going to be able to use this music or some variation?

Fixed. ;)

My question:

How would you explain Conan's character in simple words?

Will you use any characters, ideas, settings, or stories from the "pastiches"?

Will you display Conan's independence and rugged individualism?
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

Will you give the people, places and history of the Hyborian Age as much detail as Howard did, rather than just serve as a "backdrop" for Conan's adventures?

1) Are you aiming for an 'R' rating ?

2) In regards to Conan's combat scenes, will they be devoid of the silly sword twirling and eastern martial arts posturing that most movies fall prey to, instead, perhaps, will these scenes contain highly aggressive attacks oozing with speed and power, leaving no doubt in the viewers mind as to the sheer elemental ferocity of Conan's attacks ?

3) Will there be a main lust interest ? If so, will she be voluptuous with large firm fun bags, or will she be one of the current crop of anorexic Hollywood psycho’s we usually get ?
"Wow, this IS confusing! Uh, Mike, you wanna hand me my calculations?
Thank you. Well, look at that. "Hull breach, all die." Even had it
underlined." - Crow T. Robot, MST3K The Movie..Thanks Cy !

Did you see Nispel's Friday the 13th? Lots of gratuitous nudity, of the voluptuous large firm funbag variety.

No I haven't seen it, but I'm very glad to hear that he's not against having some eye candy in his movies :)

Keep it clean or take it to PM.
"Fool!" roared Kirowan. "Do you think he could take the souls of innocence? That he would not know they were beyond his reach? The girl and the youth he could kill; their souls were not his to take or yours to give. But your black soul is not beyond his reach, and he will have his wage. Look! He is materializing behind you! He is growing out of thin air!"

How do you think Conan, as a protagonist, should differ from other movie protagonists, like Burton's Batman, or Kull from the cheesy movie?

If I had the opportunity to ask him a question, it would have to be a 2-parter; the first would be if he was familiar with the character as it was originally written. If he answered that he was, my next question would be "So what are the predominant qualities you see in this character?"

I think the answer to that would be most curious.
"Their present king is the most renowned warrior among the western nations. He is an outlander, an adventurer who seized the crown by force during a time of civil strife, strangling King Namedides with his own hands, upon the very throne. His name is Conan, and no man can stand before him in battle." ~ Orastes, 'The Hour Of The Dragon'

"Damned degenerates!" ~ Conan 'Xuthal Of The Dusk'

Regarding the rumored "wizards that turn wolves into were-jackals, four-armed archers, chameleon-like stealth guards, giants, telekinesis, magical oases in the desert, and mystical lost empires", pardon my French, but what's up with that crap?

It sounds like something Oliver Stone had written on one of his benders.

Will you hire me as a REH consultant? I have a staff of 2655 REH fans and I can guarantee we will do a better job then L. Sprague deCamp did on CTB.

BTW - We welcome you to Conan.com! Will you join Conan.com and join in on the discussions? I hope so!
