I just read Drums of Tombalku a few days back. Interestingly, the main character is a guy called Amalric. Is that Amalric the same as Lord Amalric from Black Colossus?

The "BC" Amalric is a blonde Nemedian merc commander. The "HotD" Amalric is the dark-haired Nemedian baron of Tor. The Amalric of the "Tombalku Fragment" (see here: http://www.thecimmerian.com/?p=4162 ) is a young Aqilonian.

Hope that helps. :)

Nice, I think it adds a sense of realism that even back then, different people shared the same names too. I should name my kid Amalric, it sounds apt enough for people of power :P

Amalric, and similar names, such as Almuric, or Amalrus, are so common in Hyboria, I have sometimes wondered if there had been a Hyborian culture hero named Amalric, perhaps connected with the conquest of Acheron.
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

Read my Conan screenplays at The Scrolls of Ironhand (in particular my transcription of THE FROST GIANT'S DAUGHTER in Act II of "The Snow Devil") at

There are four people in the Conan yarns who sport some version of the name "Valerius".

"Amalric" is of Gothic origin, IIRC, and is a name closely associated with the history of the Crusader States (VERY likely where REH got it). "Amerigo" is the modern Italian version of "Amalric". So, one COULD say that two continents are named "lands of Amalric". ;)

I was at first confused by this too when I started reading HotD. I thought maybe I missed some story where Amalric the mercenary commander and Conan developed some strong enmity towards one another. :P

America is named after the Italian mapmaker Amerigo Vespucci so therefore, Americans are
named after Amalric...thats kind of cool...good info there!
I don't worry...I have to much on my mind

Howardian scholar, Keith Taylor, takes a quick look at all the "Amalrics" here:

Thanks for that link; kept my head spinning when I kept seeing that name. Guess Howard had a fondness for it.
