Godzilladude,
Just checking in to confirm the time for the lunch. The REHF Newsletter lists it at 12:30. Has it been changed from 2:00 p.m.?

Send my very best wishes (and utmost respect) to Mr. Lord. There's a decent chance I could make it down next year. Spend Thanksgiving with the cousins, then drive on down to Houston.

Looks like there is some doubt about whether 12:30 or 2:00 is the time for the party. Anyone who is planning to attend should keep in touch -- folks are working even now on trying to pin it down.

Okay, so I now have it on good authority that the party starts at 12:30 pm. See you there if I see you there.

I thought the interplay of the two groups was pretty interesting. Glenn had eight relatives there, including his wife, two kids (with one spouse) and four grandkids (all in their 20s). This was the first time I'd met most of them. And we had maybe eight or ten REH fans. Glenn's family wasn't sure who the heck we were or what we were doing there and why was everyone signing all those books? The REH fans couldn't seem to strike up a conversation with anyone that couldn't discuss the variations in REH spellings in his early to later desert stories in comparison to Kipling. A keen example of conversation was the REH fan who, upon hearing about the various Harleys owned by some of the family, chirps in with he still has his old Suzuki in the garage. His 250cc, 20 year old, not quite running, Suzuki. The lack of conversation lead to some absent-minded fiddlin' around with guns and knives on all sides, as most folks are wont to do when they ain't quite shore, but everyone did just fine in the end. And Glenn and Lou Ann were most pleased to have all the company.

Hangin' in Galveston the night before and the next morning with some of the other fans was really nice as well. Picked up a nice shemogh  at Col. Bubby's. I may have to do Galveston again next year.

Paul,
I was sitting on the opposite end of the table so I couldn't hear what was going on. You and Rusty were more centrally located so your analysis is probably more accurate. I was actually very glad to see the relatives. I thought that Lou Ann looked more relaxed with her family there. I was happy to see she had someone to relate to and talk with. There were six core REH fans there plus two family members. There was no room at the other end of the table so we were gathered together and mostly talked amongst ourselves. It's always nice to have an opportunity to talk with other fans at great length. I think Dennis made an attempt to bridge the gap between the two groups. He handed out copies of his anniversary issue about Glenn -- one copy for each family member there. Those of us who were contributors to it, signed the copies for them. Glenn and Lou Ann's son had left by this time so I sat in his chair across from them; their daughter opened her copy and looked at it. It is filled with tributes to her dad, so I imagine she was happy to get a copy.

I'm afraid that if the criteria for being an REH fan is the ability to discuss the variations in REH spellings in his early to later desert stories in comparison to Kipling, I would have been banished from the table. Rusty, Dennis and I arrived about five or ten minutes late. Lou Ann got up and gave us a warm welcome in spite of seeing us the previous day in Galveston. The conversation you spoke of about the Suzuki must have happened before we arrived. Maybe the family did not understand that remark could have been an attempt to communicate with them? To find some common ground. I don't know Glenn's family very well but it's difficult to believe that Todd, Damon or Dave Hardy were fiddling absentmindedly with guns or knives. They are truly some of the nicest people in Howard fandom. Besides, they weren't even at Col. Bubbie's the day before with us.

Do you know who baked the homemade cake for us? It was very good. Unfortunately, time is too short at these things and there are so many people. If we had been able to mingle immediately after dinner there would have been more opportunity for getting to know one another better. Ah well, there is always next year on that.

When we left the Monument Inn, Rusty, Dave Hardy and his family, Dennis, Todd and I visited the San Jacinto monument nearby. And no, there were no red and white and blue flowers -- see my post on the two REH poems about San Jacinto on the REH Poetry and Verse thread.

BTW I really enjoyed the ride in the Vet. Thank you for doing that.

I just received the phone call from his wife Lou Ann not five minutes ago. Glenn Lord has died. I have no details at this time, she was just calling everyone she could think to call. As soon as I have more information I will pass it along.

A very, very sad end to the year. And a very big hole in the chest of Howardom to fill, somehow.

Peace.

The hole in Howardom left by Lord's passing will never be filled and in my opinion should not be other than with fond memories and gratitude to the man who has done more for Howard's works save Howard himself. He will be missed.

Glenn Lord, the World's #1 Howard Fan and Mentor to so many of us, passed away on December 31, 2011.

That's all the details that are available at this moment (11:30 pm in Northwest Indiana).

When more information comes forth it will certainly be posted everywhere.

Rest in Peace, Glenn, our Great and Gracious Friend.

Sad news to wake up to on New Year's Day. I had the pleasure of meeting him in '06 and was even more surprised that he thanked me for some info. on Foreign reprints I'd sent him - he'll be sadly missed.

Just got home from partying with women half my age. The only thing that lessens the blow is knowing how advanced in years Glenn was. More than any other person on this planet, Glenn Lord "gave" REH to me. I'm glad I told him that twice. I would never want him to doubt that. One of the finest gentlemen I've ever met.

Condolences to his family and friends. While I never had the pleasure of meeting Glenn, his lifetime's work effected anyone who loves Robert E. Howard's writing in a profoundly positive way. Thanks to him for that.

The debt we owe him can't ever be repaid. Thanks for bringing so much of REH's work to an audience Bob himself probably never dreamed of.
