I have to admit I never liked Solomon Kane very much. At least not until I saw this movie :)

My first encounter with Solomon was in the Dark Horse comics' story "Castle Of The Devil". I loved the story, and some side characters, but I hated Kane. Don't get me wrong, I tought he had a lot of potential, but he was extremely shallow, one-dimensional and generally unlikeable. He was portrayed as nothing more then a puritan fanatic, hell-bent on revenge. Revenge to whom, and for what exactly? That was never explained. It all seems rushed, and frankly, he wasn't really a believeable character. Nor relatable. At least that was Kane in the comics. I'm not sure about Kane from Howard's stories. I'm still reading them, so we'll see ^_^

And now the movie review...

But I have to admit, James Purefoy brought a lot of personality, charm and badassery into the film version of Kane. I loved him as Mark Antony in "Rome", and I loved him as Kane. For the first time, he has some back story, an origin, and a plausible motivation for doing what he's doing in the movie. It's not original, it's not Pulitzer material, but it's not bad either. A bad guy gets scared of going to hell, so he turns good, but turns bad again in order to rescue a distressed damsel in a distressful distress, bla bla bla...

But hey, it's a swashbucklin' action movie, so I'm not exactly expecting Shakespeare. :P Still better then the comics, tough...

So, there I was, putting a Solomon Kane DVD I just rented into my faithful DVD player, opened a can of beer, and prayed to God it's not another PG-13 live-action cartoon. And there goes Kane, hacking some nameless soldiers, and... Guess what, it clearly is just a PG-13 live-action cartoon! <_< Say what you want about Dark Horse's Kane, but there was a lot of blood and guts in those comics, and the stories were mostly pure tales of horror. "Movie for kids to watch on Sunday morning while drinking hot chocolate in their pajamas" is not really what comes to mind...

I have to admit, tough, the atmosphere is great! It's grim, it's rainy, but pleasant to watch. One good thing besides Purefoy! Action sequences were properly over-the-top and mostly fun to watch, but for every cool scene there was another completely ridiculous. Like the (in)famous crucifixion, of course. Look, I'm not expecting 100% realism here, but that Jesus symbolism was completely unneccesary. It's as subtle as a blunt force trauma, and creates more plot holes then I can count in one review. I mean, if the main hero is just another human, and not some human/demon hybrid or Superman, then I expect to see at least SOME realism when it comes to his abilities. Scoring a perfect shot while in full gallop on horseback is unlikely, but at least plausible. Because in real life such a shot would be possible, albeit with a huge dose of luck. No amount of luck can save you from crucifixion.

Some monsters and set pieces were great, but the main villain and his s****y CGI demon was the final nail to Kane's coffin. Honestly, I wasn't sure if I was watching a movie or somebody's World Of Warcraft low-level boss fight... not to mention the fact that no amount of CGI and make-up can make Jason Flemyng look intimidating, or tough. Or even cool. If THAT is the best they can do for a movie climax, then it's no wonder that the movie flopped, despite some best efforts of certain people involved in it's making.

But to be honest, there was one scene I particularly liked. You guessed it, the one in the ruined church filled with ghouls.

And that's what this movie is really all about. Crappy scenes mixed with some cool ones. Good enough to watch, but too bad to recommend to anyone.

I'd say 6/10

Black Gate blogger Ryan Harvey lays out the best comments on the Solomon Kane movie I've read yet.
He manages to cut right to the film's problematic core while still seeing what it did right.

If by some miracle, there is a sequel to this SK movie, please oh please let it not be an homage to the first movie.

Positive review at io9. Best part ist there's no mention of Van Helsing! http://io9.com/59475...s-with-pilgrims

I agree. That review nailed it.

It's easy to dismiss a stupid piece of trash like Nispel's CONAN, but it's more frustrating when a movie like SOLOMON KANE comes along that almost gets there, but stumbles where it counts the most.

Outstanding review. Especially the part on the supposed necessity of an origin story for SK.

Hey, did you notice how moving my post over to this thread effectively killed all commentary on what I think is the best review of the Solomon Kane film to date?

This seems like being tidy at the expense of communication.

Not really. Not sure where your post was before.

LOVED this quote from Ryan "Ring-Haunter" Harvey:

"For some famous characters, the origin is a full journey, the complete story. But some heroes don’t require them, and trying to fashion one for them only delays from getting to what people really want to see them do. Sherlock Holmes does not need an origin story. Philip Marlowe does not need an origin story. James Bond does not need an origin story. And… Solomon Kane does not need an origin story.

Back in the day this was a very heated thread with proponents and detractors of "Solomon Kane" going at it with hammer and tongs. Looking back, I regret all the vitriol that was splashed around. Water under the bridge now, I suppose. I was, and still am, a strong supporter of SK. My original (positive) review is back there on this thread someplace. I had the chance to see an early screening long ago at a Fantasy Con in Austin. Had a pleasant conversation with Michael Bassett afterwards. I still have a great deal of admiration for the producer, Paul Berrow, for whom the film was a labor of love. Mr. Berrow is also the man behind the Wandering Star editions of the Kane stories. I thought the film was beautifully shot and boasted great art direction with the look of a much larger budgeted film. Purefoy was outstanding. I never agreed with the origin story route or the CGI monster finale. But I thought the film was a solid 3 star S&S flick. Better executed overall than Nispel's "Conan."

Solomon Kane is my favorite REH character, so it still hurts to think how the film got a bum rush on distribution. From my conversations with them, I think the producer and director would have moved a second film much closer to REH's Kane. Sadly, we'll never get a chance to find out. I still enjoy my early copy of the DVD and watch it about once a month. Mr. Berrow sent me a poster signed by Bassett and Purefoy. I have it framed on the wall of my study The screen saver on my Mac is still Purefoy as SK. Keepin' the faith.

the waves their white crests showed
When Solomon Kane went forth again,

Thanks, MMX. Good to be back in the Elizabethan saddle. Now for a few brisk canters with old companions. :D

After years of waiting I finally tracked down a copy of Solomon Kane on blu-ray in Holland that would play on my machine. I've had the UK version for some time, but never got to watch it.

Yesterday I sat down to see this great character come to life in some form, but sadly, again, a watered down version was all I got.

To be honest this is what I expected so I actually enjoyed the film for what it was, and didn't dwell too much on the faults. There were some scenes that I really enjoyed, like the hall of mirrors in the beginning of the film.

The biggest problem for me was the entire genesis of Kane was completely unnecessary. Just show me the Puritan fighting evil and leave it at that.

I'm very happy to have finally seen this film, and will watch it again. I only hope some sort of revival in the interest of Howard could open the way for someone to do a truly great Kane film.

OK. So I just finished this for the first time ... boy, it was bad.

There were some decent scenes peppered in here and there, but over all ... bad acting, bad story, bad directing ...

And Solomon Kane does not require a cheesy origin story.
