well obviously, his being wounded severely is now going to show him exactly what he is fighting for- which is basically nothing...

I like the contrast in the gladiator's lives in and out of the arena. Inside, they're somebody. They have a chance to fight or die. Outside, they're just slaves, used by everyone.

Shadow Games! I've not been that excited watching a fictional fight since Rocky 4, and that is saying something. Fools to those who are looking for another Rome series. This is some totally different; it only shares the setting so get over it. Sure I liked the dialogue driven produced and sometimes written by John Milius`Rome but not the same way I like Spartacus.

Side note; to speak to the dialogue in Spartacus, I believe their speech is as if it was translated from Latin to English. Save for the cursing of course. There is a lot more than boobs and blood going on here.;) A lot more!

It appears from those last two quotes, gentlemen, that "Spartacus" is already contributing to the culture. :P
A wild moon rode in the wild white clouds,
the waves their white crests showed
When Solomon Kane went forth again,
and no man knew his road.

After a slow start this series has really ramped up. Tonight's episode (televised on Mondays in Canada) was the best so far, even with Theokoles looking like a Wraith. This show's definitely a guilty pleasure.

Thats what i like about the show most so far. They show well the weird life of a Gladiator. When he trains, fights he is loved, famous everything outside his element he is just a slave.

Finally saw my first episode and gee, fellas, I'm having a difficult time placing where I've seen this style before...

I know they stole it from somewhere, but where? If you gave me 300 guesses, I doubt I'd place it.

Episode 5 seals the deal for me. I am now loving this series.

I am wondering are they gonna do a Conan kind thing with it, in that this series is called Blood and Sand and it deals with his time as a gladiator?
Will the second series deal with him somewhere else.

I don't know the original story.

Frankly there have been several films,tv about his time as a leader of a rebellion. Nothing about the times of him as a slave, gladiator.

Maybe they flee, the rebellion starts in the last ep of the show.

I love this show because i enjoy the characters, the harsh, violent life of the gladiator. Not because there is great action, some sex scenes....

I think they'll switch gears at some point and start the rebellion. I can't imagine the gladiator story going on indefinately.

Practically the only source we have for Spartacus is Plutarch. He says that Spartacus, a probable Thracian deserter from the Roman auxilia (only Roman citizens could serve as legionaries) was sent to the gladiator school of Batiatus at Capua and fomented a rebellion there. He does not say whether or not Spartacus actually ever fought in the arena, only that he was at the training school. He also says that the gladiators there were made to fight "not because of anything they had done, but only because of the cruelty and oppression of their master." In Plutarch's day (almost two centuries later) even a slave could not be sent to the arena without being first condemned by a court. Considering the circumstances, this place was a rebellion waiting to happen right from the get-go. The Spartacus rebellion resutled in some serious reforms of the games and of the institution of slavery itself, not for humanitarian reasons but for purely practical ones.

Sadly, Batatius and Lucretia are listed in IMDb for 6 of the shows 12 first season episodes. Whereas Spartacus, Crixus and Doctore are down for all 12. I would sure hate to see either John Hannah or Lucy Lawless exit the show, as they are two of its strongest and most interesting characters.

I think it would be interesting if Spartacus looses focus on his wife and starts finding a kinda of self respect through his gladiator role. When he finds himself starting to enjoy the vanity and bloodshed too much he gets snapped back into focus on his wife only to find some twist of fate we didn't expect.
