Dear Members,
My husband PainBrush (Danny Goudey) had a stroke late New Years Eve and died New years Day. This website meant so much to him and you guys became great friends to him. I just did not want you to wonder what happened to him because he would never stop talking to all of you. If any of you have time and care to share any funny stories or conversations I would love to hear. Thank you Sheila
Thank you

Thanks
Ps. I am new to this whole website and email thing so please be patient.

Update: Thank you all for the caring words it has meant so much to me. For those who have asked.

I am very saddened by this news Sheila - a very sad beginning to 2010.

Dan - Painbrush - was a long time member with over 4,000 posts. He often caused many of us to view subjects in a different light and no one doubted the passion and love Dan had for Robert E, Howard's prose and poetry. He defended both numerous times and never backed down or accepted any position that didn't recognize the genius of Howard's talent.

Dan was a very unique voice and will be truly missed by the forum moderators and membership here at the Official Robert E. Howard forums. Our condolences and heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to Dan's family and friends.

"Fool!" roared Kirowan. "Do you think he could take the souls of innocence? That he would not know they were beyond his reach? The girl and the youth he could kill; their souls were not his to take or yours to give. But your black soul is not beyond his reach, and he will have his wage. Look! He is materializing behind you! He is growing out of thin air!"

There was never anyone else like Dan on this forum. He made a lot of people laugh and brought all kinds of disparate knowledge to these boards. He called 'em as he saw 'em, which sometimes rubbed folks the wrong way. However, he was just as ready to apologise if he felt that he was in the wrong.

One thing's for certain: Dan Goudey was a Robert E. Howard fan to the bone.

Requiescat in pace, PB.

I haven't been a member here all that long, but I always looked forward to reading one of Painbrush's posts. His posts made me both laugh and think. Rest in peace.

I am extremely saddened at your loss, Sheila. Dan was a true character who brought a lot to these forums, both in entertainment and passion.

He will definitely be missed.

My sincere condolences.

Sheila,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Although we never met in person, I considered Dan a friend and a kindred spirit. I always looked forward to reading his posts, and this forum will not be the same without him. I'm at a loss for words...

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.

He was a great guy, and a great fan. There was nobody else quite like him. :(

I've been sitting here trying to get my thoughts into a cohesive form, and have failed miserably. This is a gut-punch from out of nowhere.

I've only been on the Forum for about a month and a half, and a PainBrush post always brought a laugh and a “Hell yeah!” from me.

His art pieces were humorous, but also were bang-on point (the DeCampista trophy he designed just a few days ago, shortly after it came up, being the most recent.)

I'm sorry, but I just can't get the image out of my head; PainBrush putting his arm around de Camp's shoulders (“Hey, de! Lets you and me have a little talk.”) and taking him round back of the celestial woodshed! HAW! I'd pay good money to see that!

I'll never get to meet him at that future Howard Days I've promised myself, but someday we'll get together with him in the Valhalla wherein dwells the reason he, and we, joined this forum. And he can tell us all those stories that Two-Gun told him first!

My deepest condolences, Miss Sheila. We've only lost a Sword Brother, but you've lost a husband, and a fine Man.

Hail and Farewell, PainBrush.

Ave atque Vale

Through many countries and over many seas
I have come, Brother, to these melancholy rites,
to show this final honour to the dead,
and speak (to what purpose?) to your silent ashes,
since now fate takes you, even you, from me.
Oh, Brother, ripped away from me so cruelly,
now at least take these last offerings, blessed
by the tradition of our parents, gifts to the dead.
Accept, by custom, what a brother’s tears drown,
and, for eternity, Brother, ‘Hail and Farewell’.

Holy crap.

You know, PB annoyed the crap out of me, and we had butted heads on numerous occasions, but I am stricken by this as if he were one of my oldest friends. I am very sad about this, and mourn his loss deeply.

I'm actually going to miss that neanderthal a lot.

My deepest condolences, Sheila. Sincerely.

A drink to his shade!

What?! What the?!

I can't believe he was still posting here 4 days ago. By...Crom...

I am really sorry to hear this. Really. He was a fine acquaintance. I appreciate the man for his bluntness, his different views towards the world around him. He has his flaws, one being too blunt at times, but he also definitely has a place here in the community, and there's a certain respect I hold towards him in that we share the same outlook towards our surroundings. I'm just really sorry I didn't get to know him better. In fact, we have corresponded a few times via PM, and he'd given me some solid advice on matters I sought for advice on. Respect to ya, brother! :(

He can't just pass away like that...man, I'm not quite sure what else to say. Please accept my deepest condolences Sheila. The community has definitely lost a very unique individual, one who will go all out to champion the rights of his hero. His unique style of writing and crazy sense of humour will definitely be missed :(

Aw, ****.

Just...****.

Shiela, my deepest condolences. Dan was such a great guy, one of the backbones of this website. I thought the world of him. I think we all did. What a blow. What a blow. Our shieldwall is all the poorer for his absence. Thanks for coming here to tell us. I know this can't be easy for you, but we do appreciate it, even if it's the kind of news no one wants to hear.

About him, I can say that it was pretty obvious that he loved life and seemed to walk it like he talked it. He was a good friend and supporter of all of our various efforts, and his posts will be missed. The only thing I can think of right now is that he's probably having a beer with REH right now, and I'm pretty sure he'll give all of us **** as we join the ranks because he got to hang out with him first. I surely hope he does.

Rest in Peace, Shield Brother. See you at the Mead Hall.

This is sad news; he was a kindred spirit and a good guy. I am sorry for your, and our, loss.

I'm simply shocked. There's an empty place in the forum from which he has been untimely ripped. I regarded Painbrush as a tower of strength and health; I will miss his outrageous humor and his blatant honesty.

Sheila, my heartfelt condolences to you and to the rest of his family. But if you had the strength to live with him in the first place, you surely have the strength to carry on.

Perhaps the forum could sponsor a Painbrush Award, or a Dan Goudy Award, for something or other, although at this point I'm not sure what it would be for.

Save some spots for us in Valhalla, brother.

I really can't think of what to say, or rather, how to properly encapsulate. This is going to be one of those stream-of-consciousness posts.

Dan was one of my favourite first memories of the community: when I introduced myself five years ago, I remember him welcoming me to the fold. I thanked him, and slyly mentioned how jealous I was that he picked such a great handle. I really was a little bit jealous: Painbrush is a great username.

Dan and I never butted heads over anything, but I remember he was involved in some legendary donnybrooks, be it over Howard's writing, his reputation, his worldbuilding, or even something daft. The man was one hell of a Robert E. Howard fan, and took no prisoners in that approach. Though Dan's unique typing fashion and fantastic comedy style made him a great figure of fun on the forum, he showed remarkable insights. For all his "caveman on a computer" persona, there was a fiercely intelligent brain in that noggin: his post on "The Frost-Giant's Daughter" was full of it.

I'm truly glad to have known Dan, even if only over the internet. His jokes always got a laugh out of me, his more serious thoughts were deceptively intelligent and well-thought out regardless of whether I agreed or not, and the forum will be a less colourful place without him.

I'm so sorry, Sheila. Rest assured, the Robert E. Howard forum are with you. As Howard would say, we will all drink to his shade.
