Maybe we will see how John Carter of Mars goes down as it may open the door for more half naked with sword movies!

"But does that style work in live-action? The recent trailer for the big-screen adaptation of John Carter seemed to indicate that its director, Andrew Stanton, had to tone down Frazetta's designs to make them work in the real world. "You wanna know why?" Rodriguez asked. "Andrew Stanton actually told his artists, 'Don't bring me Frazetta!' Frazetta's version of John Carter made such an impression on them that Stanton had to say, 'We can't just rip off Frazetta, we have to come up with something new.' Well, I can rip off Frazetta!" He laughed. "That's the whole idea. We don't have to shy away from it. We can run towards it."
Stanton's also the genius who decided on John Carter as the title, since as we all know, no girl would go see a film with "Mars" in the title, and no boy would go see a film with "Princess" in the title. So Stanton took the obvious option and ensured nobody would want to see a film with "John Carter" in the title.

I think I can see some of the logic. The word "princess" carries a lot of preconceived notions with it for the public --especially as regards a movie from Disney. The word "Mars" has a different set of preconceived notions --and none of them has anything to do with Edgar Rice Burroughs' creation as far as the general public goes.
'John Carter' as a title carries with it no meaning for the great majority of people. That seems like a weakness but it's also an empty box that Disney has the freedom to fill with the meaning they like. Obviously they'd like to turn 'John Carter' into a franchise like 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and John Carter himself a hero with the name recognition of Burroughs' other major creation Tarzan.
I'll be the first to admit that the advertising doesn't seem to be working for everyone. It works for me though.

JOHN CARTER is the most boring title imaginable.

Wes Studi for DarkWolf.
Yeah, I can see why you bring him up. Darkwolf's voice in the original sounds similar to Studi's. But could he achieve a physique like that of Stephen Lang's? How old is Studi?

Even if we need to wait another year or two, everything looks good for this becoming a reality.
As I mentioned in my earlier posting, I've been waiting years for this to happen and finally it seems it will,,.

One can only hope.. The question is; will it be sometime this decade?
I won't limit myself to this being the only reason, but it goes into my top 10 list for making it through
to 2020.

“We’re almost done with the script; we’ve got it pretty much 70 percent there. I’m really excited about that one.
“The whole idea is to make it using the technology I used for Sin City because I want it to be as if you stepped into one of [Frank Frazetta’s] paintings
“I think the timing is going to work out just right, and we’ll have a finished script in the next month or so. So we can start lengthier preproduction and we can go right into preproduction — well, we’re actually in preproduction, sort of, or we’ve been doing a lot of the previsualization. But that would be the next thing after Sin City.
“I’m really excited about that. For Frazetta fans, this will be the ultimate tribute to what he did, and inspired so many people. I think it’s going to be pretty powerful when people see it.”

I like the sound of that. Since I first heard of this project I was hoping that they would use this technique to bring the setting into alinement with Frazetta's images.
I hope that they have expanded some of the script. As I recall, in the original Darkwolf was the father of Necron. Except that it was never brought out in the actual movie. I do hope that they have added that fact to the new script. Leaving it in will, imo, help give a bit more dramatic impact to the film.
My only other hope is that they go for an "R" rating. Even as an animated film it had a level of graphic violence for it's time. It would be a disservice to fans of Frazetta and the original film to water it down.

Anyway, regarding the possible film's rating, I think it's very likely it'll be R, especially if the budget is a conservative one, a la Solomon Kane and Sin City.

just came across this 1991 Q&A of Roy Thomas, who, with Gerry Conway, wrote the script for the original Fire and Ice.
According to Thomas, Ralph Bakshi decided to shoot only 78 minutes of the 2-hour script he and Conway had written, which as a result made certain elements in the film incomprehensible(like the statue of Darkwolf that Larn finds in some ruins). Their script also explained the relationship between the characters(such as Darkwolf being the father of Nekron).
So, I think this can be definately be a remake with much room for improvement, not just with technology, but also storywise.
Also, I don't know if anyone has seen these other conceptual designs for the remake by Justin Sweet:

"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard
