Margaret Brundage was sometimes hit or miss when depicting men, but her women were always beautiful and alluring. Her covers are actually pastels, not paintings. She did nine covers for Conan stories, only three of which depict Conan himself. THis is my favorite:

Monk asked if I could post some of the covers and interior art from the original pulps, so here are few from my collection, starting with the very firt depiction of Conan by Jayem Wilcox in the 12/32 issue of Weird Tales.

very cool. I like the composition of the whole page, using the type and everything to graphically make the whole.

"Our basic purist premise:
ROBERT E. HOWARD, ENTIRELY ALONE, WITHOUT ASSISTANCE FROM ANY OTHER PERSON, CREATED THE CHARACTER CONAN OF CIMMERIA. NO OTHER PERSON OR PERSONS SHOULD BE INTRUDING THEIR WORK INTO THE VOLUMES OF HOWARD'S CONAN STORIES.
In essence, we believe that the work of any creative artist -- writer, painter, illustrator, musician, what-have-you -- is a unique expression of an artistic point of view. It should not be appropriated or altered by others without the artist's consent. No other writer has Robert E. Howard's unique point of view, and no other writer knows what Howard would have done with his character had he lived. Upon his death, his canon, the expression of his artistic vision, became fixed. Tampering with it now is desecration."

Found this online, thought it was kind of neat.
Conan in the modern world?
Posted Image
There's that damn sword, though...

This is quite obviously meant as a metaphor on various levels.

1) You have Conan in a bar getting angry drunk. Obviously unhappy with his life. Maybe a metaphor for how he has been treated?

2) REH looking on disapprovingly, like a disappointed father "I did not raise you to be like this."

3) The sword is also a reference to his disappointing representations.

4) The Wolverine poster represents the over saturation of the market with what is "cool", including Conan himself.

That's how I see it, anyways.
