Very good work and I don`t care if Conan`s face is not shown in the picture. The drama is there, the atmosphere, that is what really matters.
You see, Dark Horse should take a look at this tread. Here are dozens and dozens of samples of good art, of what fans most likely expect to see in a Conan magazine. It seems so obvious for me... maybe it might be hard to find artists that can fill an issue every month with such quality, but anyway, I just wish we could buy every month a comic in such level.
I still hope for the best in the new series, though things point right to the opposite side it seems.

To get high level I wouldn't mind if they were working bimonthly...

Mikoza, thanks a lot for the Meseldzija version of Frost Giants' daughter battle!!
I'd like to see REAL painted covers in future issues of Conan DH comics , digital is ok for a while but it gets tiresome in the end .

Conan commission (Frost Giant's Daughter) by Petar Meseldzija. This is still a work in progress.
My only complaint: When you draw illustration (not interior art), it is always much better to show the main hero's face (at least partially). Otherwise, I think, this is fantastic art!

I think this is fantastic. IMO, He's got Conan's figure, positioning and armaments so down that he's immediately recognizable even with his back fully turned. Compare to Frazetta's frost giants when only about a quarter of Conan's face is visible. What really sets this apart though, is there is a real sense of motion and life captured here, (like a Frazetta) and doesn't give you the sense that it's models posing for tableau. Can't wait to see this finished. Dark Horse! Hire this man for covers!

and he's clearly done some research. I love the treatment on the one giant's horns, that's pretty cool.

I think Conan's leg is more successful in the sketch than in the painting. I do hope he keeps the expressive brush strokes if that is indeed an underpainting.

The pose looks like ... a pose. Forced and artificial. It suffers in comparison to Petar Meseldzija.

Edited by Ironhand, 03 January 2012 - 08:25 AM.

"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

I like it too and it's realistically frightening.

Exactly! There was a real sense of horror and suspense in REH's writing and even in some of the Frazetta paintings that I think has been lost somewhat over time. I'd love to see more horror styled illustration/adaptations of Conan. We have enough grand 'flexing on a mountain' power posing. Posted Image

If I remember aright, this illustration is by Gary Gianni and shows Conan fighting ghouls in the Ghoul Forest of Zingara from "The Hour of the Dragon". I admit, though, that the ghouls do look rather ape-like. Still, Gianni's definitely one of my favorites among more recent Conan illustrators.

I really like Gary's depiction of the ghouls because whenever I read the original story I sort of imagine them as gray, hairless apes, more or less the same as in the picture. I think though, it has more to do with REH's description of the dungeon ape earlier in the story:

Conan knew it at last - understood the meaning of those crushed and broken bones in the dungeon, and recognized the haunter of the pits. It was a gray ape, one of the grisly maneaters from the forests that wave on the mountainous eastern shores of the Sea of Vilayet. Half mythical and altogether horrible, these apes were the goblins of Hyborian legendry, and were in reality ogres of the natural world, cannibals and murderers of the nighted forests.

I know they're not the same creature, but still the illustration is quite close for me.

Apes and snakes, apes and snakes, I'm sure Conan was sick of them by the end. Posted Image

Hey! I love that excerpt of REH's Conan story!

Not Conan, but I wanted to get a shout out to the Keegans in the Seriously Good Art thread. This is the OA for the 2010 Howard Days postal cancellation, which is now hanging in my foyer and is the first thing any one sees when they walk in the front door. B)
