So did you llke Battlestar Galactica 2? I know this is off topic, but if we're talking about uppers and downers and bleak endings...

I'm only familiar with the 78 version.

I'm only familiar with the 78 version.

If you like claustrophobic downers with bleak endings, you'd love BG2.
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

Read my Conan screenplays at The Scrolls of Ironhand (in particular my transcription of THE FROST GIANT'S DAUGHTER in Act II of "The Snow Devil") at

I wouldn't say the new BSG ended bleakly, but it was ambiguous.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend a few years back. I was joking that the last episode of BSG would have Galactia crash on Earth, with Baltar the only survivor. Then he would find a toppled statue of himself and scream, "Maniacs! They blew me up!" Then a bunch of gorillas on horseback would come and drag him off . . . :P
"It is more than a mortal sea. Your hands are red with blood and you follow a red sea-path, yet the fault is not wholly with you. Almighty God, when will the reign of blood cease?"

Turlogh shook his head. "Not so long as the race lasts."

I can't believe that a series like this was ever popular. Almost every film has endings that range from downbeat to outright bleak. The world blows up, the main characters get gunned down, the human race is overthrown! And most of these had G-ratings, to boot!

I grew up in the 70's and I find it hard to take the saccharine coated, post focus group, happy endings that appear to be a prerequisite for most modern movies.

Right on. The '60s and '70s had plenty of movies with ambiguous/bleak endings. Hey! Kinda like real life.

I thought RotA was a really good movie with moments of brilliance. In some ways (mainly in Caesar's character arc), it reminded me of ERB's Tarzan of the Apes in reverse.

After PotA, charlton Heston had a mini-career in the dystopian sci-fi genre, and all his films had cleak endings, and all are considered classics today.

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.

wow. this looks sick.

I even had some of the action figures from Planet when I was a kid. The gorilla general and I had some of the soldier figures too with those carbines...always had them fighting with six million dollar man. What cool toys.

Anyway this looks really good!

I had a "General Ursus" piggy bank. Crom, I wish I still had that.

I always looked at it as a trifecta of cautionary tales about the future.

Planet of the Apes
The Omega Man
Soylent Green

great movies!
