"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

I've actually been registered on this website for a while now, but have never gotten around to actually posting in the forums until now. I joined this community because I'm a sucker for the kind of fantasy adventure stories Robert E. Howard would tell. He's among my favorite writers in any genre (though my absolute favorite has to be Charles R. Saunders, author of the Imaro series, which IIRC were actually inspired by Howard). Also, the recent Conan movie was awesome.

Hello everyone, new to the Conan forums!
Welcome! Nice avatar, btw!

Money and muscle, that's what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won't do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won't enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.

Read my first Conan book when I was in 6th grade.
I can't recall if it was 'King Conan' or 'Conan Of Cimmeria'....too long ago.
But, I've been a fan ever since.
Personally, given the plethora of Conan authors, the only Conan authors I would read are by REH and Robert Jordan.
I have the complete (12) Ace series purchase when they first starting printing them.
I also have the (3) Jordan ones being 'Chronicles Of Conan' - 'Further Chronicles Of Conan' and 'Sagas Of Conan.
Lastly, I have 'Conan The Swordsman' in paper back which I believe is redundant with what I already have.
From what I've read on the web the REH purists have little good things to say of the many other authored renditions.
Carry on.....have a good weekend.

I'm a new kid checking out the forums.

Welocome aboard, Quaz! So, did you start out reading one of the Gnome Press volumes? I did.
From what I've read on the web the REH purists have little good things to say of the many other authored renditions.
Ah, the "purist" thing. You might want to check out this thread:
http://www.conan.com...st&fromsearch=1
...and this document: http://www.rehupa.co...e_manifesto.htm
"Purist" gets thrown around a quite a bit on this fine forum, usually by someone who wants to portray another member as narrow-minded/whatever. Burke's manifesto nowhere forbids readers from enjoying Howardian pastiches. Mr. Burke himself is on record as being a fan of the pastiche work by Roy Thomas and Wagner. I, myself, am a fan of those two as well as Hocking and Roberts. While there are a few (self-labeled) "purists" proclaiming they read "REH and nothing but" who occasionally post here, most "purists" that one finds in Howard fandom are of the "Burkean" variety (including myself). Just setting the record straight.
Carry on.....have a good weekend.
You do the same.

For the record...trust me....I'm no 'purist' nor pretend to be any literary critic.
Hope I'm not inadvertently 'stirring the pot' from an epic thread.
I just read a lot of 'reviews' (for what they are worth) about the all the Conan versions during my web research.
I believe half of what I see and none of what I hear anyway but the 'purist' attitudes in many of the reviews was painfully obvious to me.
Personally, I like REH and Jordon and have yet not read any of the other authors.
Frazetta's artwork is still most captivating to me.
Just today I ordered 'Conan The Destroyer' (Jordon) in paperback for three big dollars which completes my purchasing interests.....for the moment.
Can't recall if my first was Gnome or not.
A friend in 8th grade recommended Conan and I checked it out from the library.
Hard bound...a bit worn on the edges.
Yeah....guitar playing....I've stuck with it over some decades.
It's good therapy.
Thanks for the responses and welcome.
Carry on...

I have just 3 nice words for you......Personally, I like REH and Jordon and have yet not read any of the other authors....
JOHN MADDOX ROBERTS
----
Greatest Conan pastiche writer, and a regular poster on these fine forums.
[ i like Jordan, very good, but Roberts is much better at grim Conan, and dark weird tales. ]

Thank you both for the recommendations and I'm happy to check them out.
Very cool that John Maddox Roberts contributes here also.

Being as how I'm 64 it must have been the 'Gnome press' volumes in my elementary school library.
Couldn't sleep so here I am wasting bandwidth.
Have a good day all...

Mr. Hocking posts here at least as much as JMR. We're glad to have them both.

Without a doubt. The Gnomes, not the Lancers were my first intro to REH's Conan.

2010 summer noticed things weren't right between and me and Mrs Howler. Dec 2010. Mrs Howler says she wants divorce after 9 years of marriage, howler knows he is not an easy guy to live with, combat vet, (paratrooper 82nd airborne) now wrestling/grappling coach, single father of 3 before we met, howler pretty broken up at first.
Mrs howler knew what she was getting and she also knew howler doesnt party, does smoke a little mj, doesnt drink often, but likes good beer will drink new years, birthday, and 4th of july and maybe one or two other times a year. like good exspensive beer. Jan 2011 howler kicks wife out of house till he finds him house to live in. Mrs howler is a jam band fan and a party chick stays gone for about a 3rd of year, last 3 to 4 years in row since kids get out of highschool. spends holwers money howler lives off of 300 a month and still runs gym.
finds house took 4 months to get, was still looking while trying to get house wanted, little trouble from sellers due to number (20 something damn it) heirs, still got good deal on brick house on a nice "holler" (hollow-howler from eastern KY, he can say that) kept getting flak from future ex mrs howler wanting"her"house back, howler takes time doesnt give a shit. kids. howlers kids not future ex kids (she has none) take mrs howlers side despite her cheating on their dad howler. howler gets confused hurt then pissed disowns kids all in their 20s. Ex mrs howler family has money but ex mrs howler doesnt and lives beyond her means underderminers howlers athority with howlers kiids, ex mrs howler is left wing liberal howler thinks since he is strict and not rich howlers kids lean towards no displine and money, oldest gay female left wing liberal, like ex mrs holwer, hate military therefor hate every male member of howlers family howler told this by howler oldest while howler is going through divorce howler thinks oldest knew about affair ex mrs howler was having. howler pretty mad..
.
Moved into house April 2011 love house 4.5 acres great change from ex mrs howlers house, one good note howlers gym he is partners in teaching wrestling (3rd in state in1985) and combat grappling. fight and grappling team does well, win tournys and fights, howler doesnt fight howler old 45 but does grapple competitivly got 4th and 3rd in 2 tourneys grappling younger guys cause no old fat bastards like howler go to those damn tournments, got girlfriend summer of 2011,hot looking but party chick howler had to kick her to curb, howler doesnt party. Howlers doberman dies, howler loved that damn dog, howler spends holidays alone not to happy howlers best friends son hangs self, howlers other good friends and students looses baby to SIDS funeral yesterday.
Good note howlers gym hosts seminars by isreal gomez, anderson silvas corner man and thai kick boxing trainner, howler gets 2nd stripe on blue belt oldest member of gym 2nd oldest in 5 gym 150 or so memeber bjj group.
howler not sure why share so much, been pissed long time, but easing off, really enjoying having money now that divorced and freedom ot work on gym, gyms competition team MMA and grappling doing well. developing highly skilled grapplers who win at tourneys and MMA fights despite no black belt in gym only in bjj group.
Howler just watched new connan on xbox thought about this site found it! on new conan didnt like the butcherd story did like the fights, oh well hollywood sucks sometime.
last time holwer talks in 3rd person. finds out it is kind of a pain in the ass to read, howler real sorry about that but started and now has to finish, glad to find the site and log in. will be more active. site looks new,
going to check out other threads glad to be back hope to have to fun, talk to ya later
thanks for reading
