KING CONAN: THE PHOENIX ON THE SWORD #3
Tim Truman (W), Tom‡s Giorello (A), Josˇ Villarrubia ©, and Andrew Robinson (Cover)
King Conan has built his empire by brawn and by blade, but there are dangers that lurk in the shadows of his throne that cannot be slain by the Cimmerian's steel. Assassins are at his chamber door, and Thoth-Amon--back to the height of his power--is summoning fearsome fiends from the fiery pit! If he is to survive the night, Conan will need to enlist the aid of the gods! 32 pages, $3.50, in stores on March 28.

THAT is the cover?
The awkward anatomy and pose, ridiculous muscles, and look, the fur diaper is back...
This is terrible!

Cromdamned thing belongs in the Picture Caption Club, where it can be mocked properly.

I like it. It is the first cover I have seen in this series that is actually related to the story. The odd distortions in Conan's body may reflect the surreal aspects of a dream. I like it better than the perhaps artistically superior covers of the first two issues.
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

The background in the painting is great - the stones steps, the bearded man, the serpent, the lightning, etc. I'm just not sure what to make of Conan's warped look, but Ironhand might be correct about it reflecting the surreal dream.

if the snake had teats and epimetrius was i dunno, say wearing high heels and had fairy wings somehow I'd say yeah, surreal dream, but in this case I'm going to say it's a lack of anatomy drawing in art school. this reminds me of the cover where conan's leg is the exact same width as his torso, fighting the tentacles...

Lots of muscles (Many here will love it. Look at Conan`s torso! Wow! - sarcasm!).
Lack of action.
The colors on page 6 are beautiful.

Oh for crying out loud, do we still need Old King Conan interjecting in the story? I wouldn't mind quite as much if they didn't shorten and abbreviate other parts of the story, but as it is...

I know some of you are sick of the Old King Conan, but I thought the visual usage of the character was really interesting.

I was sick of Old KIng Conan the first time I laid eyes on him. IMHO, REH had a mortal fear of old age, and would never have written about such. If anything, his Conan would have figured out a (probably suicidal) way to cheat Old Age.
