Most of the ones I've read have been based on properties/stories, some of my favorites are (in no particular order):
1. Conan & Related Titles (Dark Horse). I know it's not exactly the most faithful representation, but I think it utilizes RE Howard plots in an entertaining way and the art is pretty good.
2. Elric of Melnibone (Pacific Comics '83-84). I thought the art was good and suited the story, a downside is that it tends to rely on a lot of exposition. The story they were trying to tell was more than the six-issue run was built to handle, but aside from being a bit crammed it is a good take.
3. Elric - Making of a Sorcerer (DC '04-'06). I was ambivalent on the art, but the writing was good and interesting to an Elric fanatic.
4. Elric - The Balance Lost (BOOM! '11-) has been good in terms of story, but what most amazes me is the portrayal of Elric in the art. He is much more like the vision I got reading the books than the sort of Johnny Depp watercolor Elric that seems to be in all the comics.
Strangest:
Hawkmoon - Jewel in the Skull [First '86] has some hilarious artwork. You will start to notice that people in solid plate armor often show muscular ripples that match their motion. Skin tight flexible breastplates! I don't want to rag on the effort that went into the book, but the artist seriously made it hilarious because it looks like superheros fighting in faux-medieval armor. Even the attacks with weapons are like leaping Superman punches.
