I'm always looking to find a flick that passed under my radar that's worth renting or buying. I'll go ahead and suggest a couple of my own as a movie from last night inspired this post. I've seen some good movie info on here, so I'm fishing for more.

Kill the Irishman (2011) - Ray Stevenson, Christopher Walken, Vincent D'Onofrio
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1416801/
This a pretty new and pretty darn good.

The Blood of Heroes - Rutger Hauer, joan Chen (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094764/

"Irishman" is excellent. Haven't seen the other, but I'm a Hauer fan from WAY back.

I have mentioned this film before, and I'm gonna say it again; Warrior. The film is set in the world of MMA, but it is more of a powerful family drama than a sports movie. Special mention for Nick Nolte and Tom Hardy. This film is very good, and it was missed by most veiwers. It deserves better.

Definitely not a macho movie, but I love this little diddy about a Nobel prize winning doctor at a medical college who is trying to grow his dead wife from cloning cells: Creator, starring Peter O'Toole

I love a movie with good, quotable lines. This one has a ton, like, "SONOFABITCH! One word! Accent, second syllable!"

Or, another, bit darker film, that I'm crazy about is Glengarry Glen Ross, with Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, and Kevin Spacey.

Excellent film. It's really a filmed play--of David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same name.

And, talk about quoteable. "PUT THE COFFEE DOWN! Coffee is for closers." "You see this watch? This watch costs more than your car."

Plus, let's not forget Baldwin's unforgettable pep talk to the sales force, "We're doing something a little different with the sales contest this month. First place is a Cadillac Eldorado. Second place? A set of steak knives. Third place is your fired."

If you've ever sold anything in your life, you'll "get" this film. If a company has ever made you sit through seminars of cheesy sales techniques, you'll "get" this movie. And, if you've never wanted to sell anything to make money, this movie will confirm your convictions.

I really liked Jeff Bridges' Academy Award nominated role in Starman.

The Devil's Advocate is one of Keanu Reeve's best roles.

Enemy Mine reminds me of 1940's pulp sci-fi.

I've heard about this. I need to look into it. It might be time for me to get a netflix account or use Hulu.

If you want a shot of adrenaline and don't mind subtitles, I'd heartily recommend The Good, The Bad, The Weird. Its an awesome mixture of Indiana Jones and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. As much as I hate it's overuse in advertising, this Korean western really is a thrill ride.

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=OzNnCK5cd8Q
"I am a landless man." A strange, intangible, almost mystic look flashed into his cold eyes. "I come out of the sunset and into the sunrise I go, wherever the Lord doth guide my feet. I seek... my soul's salvation, mayhap. I came, following the trail of vengeance. Now I must leave you. The dawn is not far away, and I would not have it find me idle. It may be I shall see you no more. My work here is done; the long red trail is ended. The man of blood is dead. But there be other men of blood, and other trails of revenge and retribution. I work the will of God. While evil flourishes and wrongs grow rank, while men are persecuted and women wronged, while weak things, human or animal, are maltreated, there is no rest for me beneath the skies, nor peace at any board or bed. Farewell!"

Mario Bava's colorful and eccentric adaptation of the Italian super-criminal Diabolik is wonderful; especially for those of us with an anarchist streak. John Phillip Law is at his coolest in this.

It has one of the most unique endings you can imagine. The final comment about it on the Mystery Science Theater version is absolutely priceless.

I think you mean Henry Fonda instead of Van Cleef, Lee was in two of the Eastwood westerns. Van Cleef made a bunch of other interesting spaghetti westerns, probably most memorably Death Rides a Horse with "Diabolik" himself John Phillip Law, and Sabata. I actually prefer the sequel to that one Adios Sabata with Yul Brynner.

Talking spaghetti westerns, I really recommend The Great Silence by Sergio Corbucci, with Klaus Kinski as one of the smartest and most ruthless bad guys you'll ever see. You know the villain that makes you mutter to yourself 'Why the heck would he do that??' Kinski ain't that guy. One of the most surprising endings I've ever seen, and all set in the snowbound mountains of Utah with bounty hunters tracking down fugitive Mormons.

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=RAJI-UQ4Tak

I'm also a fan of A Bullet For The General with Kinski and Gian Maria Volonte (Indio from For A Few Dollars More).

On a slightly related note, David Mamet, the writer of Glengarry Glen Ross, wrote and directed an excellent norisih movie set in the world of Jujutsu and MMA starring Chiwetel Ejiofor (of Serenity), called Red Belt.

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=_LlkIRIQeuc

I also recommend seeing Tom Jayne in Stander, based on the true story of a South African police captain who begins robbing banks and is assigned to his own case! Awesome movie.

I own Blood of Heroes. Great movie. Also features Joan Chen and a young Vincent D'onofrio.

Highly recommend Cross of Iron (1977), starring James Coburn, James Mason, Maximilian Schell, and (one of my personal favorite actors) David Warner. Probably the finest WWII Eastern Front movie ever (better than Enemy at the Gates, IMHO)

Speaking of Rutger Hauer again, there's Verhoeven's Flesh And Blood (1985). Been a long time since I watched it, not sure if it still holds up. Thought it was killer when I was, I dunno...fourteen?

Need to see it again.

If you can find it, and I bet you can't, because it's stupidly obscure, BBC Bristol did an animated film called Fallen Angels in 1997 which is simply stunning. Road movie with voodoo, kung fu, a cool dog and amazing music. I taped it on my VCR and then got it put onto DVD. I think I must be the only person on earth who watches it ten times a year.
