Historical Warrior Illustrations
I think that is SO MUCH BETTER than superhero or pseudo-Grecian style of the comics. All the details of movement, harness and gear, etc. are just awesome. It can't take as much money or time to get one of these old military history illustrators to do a comic book than it would to get Alex Ross on one, and I think it would be SO much cooler to see a battlefield with real warriors fighting something that resembles an actual battle than the Batman-with-Swords style favored by Dark Horse.

A lot of fantasy covers do have armor and weapons and stuff but it's apparent the artist often doesn't know how they were used or that gigantic gilded hilts with dragons teeth are not very good for real weapons, as well as they might sell at Excalibur. And the plate armor is often drawn with little regard for how actual plate was shaped (this problem exists in video games too, Elder Scrolls have the most ridiculous looking weapons and armor I can't stand playing them anymore).

Bah, I wish cartoony stuff weren't so popular! More fantasy artists and writers need to be historians and like Bob and Lovecraft.

Thaks for the heads-up brother...it's allways good to see some inspiring work. The only thing I found urealistic is the archer pulling the recurved bow string with thumb and forefinger...but, no one is perfect

Archer is using a thumbring. It's authentic.

Thanks and pardon my ignorance, I'll check it out. And my apologies to the artist.

People who wouldn't stand for a movie set in New York with all the wheels mounted ON TOP of the taxies seem to have NO problem enjoying art that depicts arms and armour that would get the wielder/wearer killed in short order.

That's a good link, but my favorite historical military artist is still the one and only Angus McBride:

Just do a "google images" on the guy. He's done everything.

Angus McBride is great - I believe he's done a lot of work for Osprey? I swear, I wish Osprey books had a plotline, haha. I'd buy them all.

And, yes, as regards the audiences in general - I understand that I have very Aspergers taste in my artwork, haha. But stuff that makes sense and engages the mind is so much cooler than colors on a screen. If I wanted that I could just smoke some salvia and listen to the James Bond soundtrack, and it'd be a lot cheaper than going to see some craptastic film.

To me, a fantasy illustration that ignores the basic logic of armor is like 'science fiction' that ignores science - it isn't what it claims to be, it's just badly written. I remember some guy went off on a two page rant on StarDestroyer.net one time why sci-fi that ignores physics is just bad writing...I feel the same way about fantasy. If you're going to make changes to reality make them have an impact and a reason, or just don't do it. If you're deploying tropes just because they'll sell at an Albertsons check-out line you're a hack.

Carlos Alberto Santos does good work, too!

everyday I learn something new...these are exciting times...

That means you're not dead yet!

You really can't judge a book by it's cover. For $3.50 this is what you get:

I'd be buying the comic art off of your link all day:

Yeah, I often use Osprey as historical reference. They put out some good stuff. They even have a book on Picts, which is one of the few books on Picts you can actually get your hands on.
"It is more than a mortal sea. Your hands are red with blood and you follow a red sea-path, yet the fault is not wholly with you. Almighty God, when will the reign of blood cease?"

Turlogh shook his head. "Not so long as the race lasts."

I like what he does, but his palette is a little "washed out" for my taste.

love this piece.
"I live, I BURN WITH LIFE, I love, I slay, and am content."
"Here's to brother Painbrush, we drink to his Shade..."
"All Art Is Martial"- RZA

"Our basic purist premise:
ROBERT E. HOWARD, ENTIRELY ALONE, WITHOUT ASSISTANCE FROM ANY OTHER PERSON, CREATED THE CHARACTER CONAN OF CIMMERIA. NO OTHER PERSON OR PERSONS SHOULD BE INTRUDING THEIR WORK INTO THE VOLUMES OF HOWARD'S CONAN STORIES.
In essence, we believe that the work of any creative artist -- writer, painter, illustrator, musician, what-have-you -- is a unique expression of an artistic point of view. It should not be appropriated or altered by others without the artist's consent. No other writer has Robert E. Howard's unique point of view, and no other writer knows what Howard would have done with his character had he lived. Upon his death, his canon, the expression of his artistic vision, became fixed. Tampering with it now is desecration."
