On the one hand, if they're doing a familiar (REH?) Conan story from a different perspective - say, "The Tower of the Elephant" from Yogah's perspective, or a prequel of sorts - that'd be quite cool. I could get behind that sort of thing. On the other hand, The Sorrow of Akivasha.

I actually liked Akivasha, since her motivation for going after Conan is pretty much the same as in the original (She was bored with the weaklings she was given and wanted a big strong man). It managed to balance human and monster.

The problem was that it took so many liberties with what we know from "The Hour of the Dragon" (Conan killing the Stygian priests instead of the Khitan-Stygian massacre, Conan wearing a featureless gold mask instead of the bestial animal mask, calling her a "monster" rather than vampire, etc). Her motivation's the same, but in order to make Akivasha seem "human" it resulted in a LOT of mucking about with the details, which I don't think was necessary at all.

Agreed.

BTW, did Robert E. Howard ever get anything right the first time?

Better yet: "Queen of the Black Coast"! <_<

"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

While I get the basis of Taraniach's post, the Khitan mercenaries do actually feature in Akivasha.
