FC, 32 pages

$3.50

Ongoing

Brian Wood introduces Conan to a kind of fear he’s never experienced, in part two of “The Death”!

After the salvage of a derelict ship, a terrifying illness spreads swiftly throughout the Tigress, felling Bêlit and her entire crew. Healthy but fearful of losing Bêlit, Conan seeks help in a nearby town, where the welcome he recieves is just as deadly!

• From Brian Wood (Northlanders) and Declan Shalvey (Dark Avengers)!

• The most acclaimed Conan comics in years!

“Conan the Barbarian thus far has been the perfect example of how to make great comics.” —Comic Book Resources

Anyone want to add the cover? I'm still having trouble with that.

Have you noticed how the last three arcs are basically about how afraid Conan and Belit are about one thing or another?

Wow! Conan's got muskels! :)
"Did you deem yourself strong, because you were able to twist the heads off civilized folk, poor weaklings with muscles like rotten string? Hell! Break the neck of a wild Cimmerian bull before you call yourself strong. I did that, before I was a full-grown man...!" - Conan, in "Shadows in Zamboula", by Robert E. Howard
"... you speak of Venarium familiarly. Perhaps you were there?"
"I was," grunted [Conan]. "I was one of the horde that swarmed over the hills. I hadn't yet seen fifteen snows, but already my name was repeated about the council fires." - "Beyond the Black River", by Robert E. Howard

So, I'm waiting to hear if I can start buying CONAN again with #11.

much better effort.
"I live, I BURN WITH LIFE, I love, I slay, and am content."
"Here's to brother Painbrush, we drink to his Shade..."
"All Art Is Martial"- RZA

"Our basic purist premise:
ROBERT E. HOWARD, ENTIRELY ALONE, WITHOUT ASSISTANCE FROM ANY OTHER PERSON, CREATED THE CHARACTER CONAN OF CIMMERIA. NO OTHER PERSON OR PERSONS SHOULD BE INTRUDING THEIR WORK INTO THE VOLUMES OF HOWARD'S CONAN STORIES.
In essence, we believe that the work of any creative artist -- writer, painter, illustrator, musician, what-have-you -- is a unique expression of an artistic point of view. It should not be appropriated or altered by others without the artist's consent. No other writer has Robert E. Howard's unique point of view, and no other writer knows what Howard would have done with his character had he lived. Upon his death, his canon, the expression of his artistic vision, became fixed. Tampering with it now is desecration."

Definitely an improvement from where the book was seemingly going, but still some off moments in there. Art's OK.

There are a couple of things I don`t like in this preview: first, the art is not as enticing as the previous number. Second, and this is the thing that bothers me the most, not only is Conan once again depicted as a desperate man who doesn`t know what to do and is in search of help, such as in previous numbers, but he also is a man that stops fighting, after being almost killed and says he doesn`t want to fight, he wants to talk!
This is a little bit strange. In some ways, it does not look like Conan to me.
It seems that once again Wood is developing his own Conan, not Howard`s. and this is bad news.
Mr Wood, your Conan will NEVER be as good as the original, stick to it.

Sigh...this may sound like nitpicking, but did the whole "Ooh this guy has no idea who he's talking to LOL he's gonna get it now!" scene really need 5 pages? It could have easily been done in 1 or 2. Wood seems stuck on this idea of people constantly underestimating Conan, but while that idea may work well for other characters, it doesn't for this one. Conan is meant to just exude an ere of power and menace, and this cliché 'pick on the stranger' bar scene is something we've all seen a million times. It's boring.

Aquilonia is right, this doesn't feel anything like Conan.

Actually, this doesn't bother me.

REH frequently has people misunderestimating Conan, so that part's ok. I love seeing bullies picking on the stranger in the bar when the stranger is Conan.

As for Wood stretching the confrontation out over several pages, that builds tension.

And Conan's mission was evidently to gather information. That being the case, he would be reluctant to blow the mission.

The artwork is an improvement but it still seems like "Conan the Teenager" to me. The guy calls him "pup", wasn't Conan a hardened veteran at this time, hardly a boy

Another good issue, I thought. I'm really curious why Conan seems to be immune to the disease; is it his excellent constitution or something else? Would be interesting if it were the latter...perhaps something to do with that strange talisman he found on the dead man.

Just read your review. Did we know from the start that this would be a three-issue story arc?

They are all 3-issue story arcs. That is how the series is designed. 3-issue story arcs that rotate with the artists.... and I am getting kind of bored of it ...

I like the preview for issue #12, though. I think this will be one of the better arcs in the series.

I completely agree with you about the 3-issue arcs getting stale already. It's just dull, and I find myself skipping stories waiting for some good ones to start.

Hey Zack - I always wondered - do reviewers get free comics or do you have to buy them?
