When I was managing editor for The Cimmerian blog, we always needed cool art for the bloggers' entries. I lost all the art I retrieved from the Net when my old PC went south, suddenly.

I noticed the other day that there isn't a general thread for worthy "art" blogs/sites. This thread is dedicated to providing links to places on the Net which feature "Howardian" art.

What do I mean by "Howardian art"? Art from the 20th century and earlier (on the whole). Howard first got published in the '20s and '30s, illustrated by the likes of Joseph Clement Coll and Virgil Finlay. Just as REH looked back to earlier writers (from his perspective), his tastes seem to have been in the direction of "realistic", not the more modern "abstract" art. Howard's one nod to "modernism" appears to be a liking for comics/sequential art.

Also, the modern trend toward posed/static/photographic/"swiped" art can be roundly ignored.

Frank Frazetta was an admirer of NC Wyeth. Wyeth himself was a product of Howard Pyle's "Brandywine" school of art. That pedigree stretches back into the 1800s.

So, I'm saying: NO need to post links to sites that love Picasso or Pollock. Feel free to start another thread. :)

What this thread IS intended for is to promote sites devoted to art from the "good old days" or art derived therefrom. Everything from Da Vinci to Bisley. However, sites that focus on just one artist should really be linked to/posted on THAT artist's thread. Some threads we already have:

Frazetta
Ken Kelly
Barry Windsor-Smith
Gianni

Remember, the search engine is your friend. :)

Anyway, blogs/sites that specialize in appreciating the pop culture art of the 20th century (and earlier) is (ideally) what we're wanting here.

REH wrote fantasy, sci-fi, horror, westerns, historicals, detective and boxing yarns. Sites that feature art in those categories would be awesome (especially if they're pulp-related). Comic art sites are fine as long as they aren't exclusively superheroic. A Howard connection would be nice. :)

Some cool fantasy/horror/sci-fi art sites:

http://goldenagecomi...2&by-date=false

http://mydelineatedlife.blogspot.com/

http://pencilink.blogspot.com/

Author Paul Bishop (a Howard fan) has this cool boxing/neo-pulp blog:

http://bishsbeat.blo...ight-pulps.html

Honestly, Bish's blog was the closest thing I could find to a blog/site devoted to boxing/sports pulps, let alone an art blog.

This art blog has some "Western Art" leanings, but is more about horror/"American Gothicism":

http://theanadromist...western-gothic/

Once again, there doesn't seem to be anyone really interested (on the Net) in the venerable history of art inspired by the American West. Just because Russell, Remington, Wyeth, Frazetta and Bama thought Western Art was worth doing doesn't mean anyone should create a site for such.

I guess "Western" fans don't have access to the Net or they just don't care about Western art.

By all means, I hope someone else can find some cool sites devoted to boxing and cowboy art. BTW, commercial gallery websites suck (IMO). They don't really count.

Now that I've trash-talked commercial "gallery"/art-monger sites, here's a link to the Rockwell Museum of Western Art:

I wish their stuff was bigger than thumbnails, but still some amazing work.

Here's a great site devoted to '70s comics (the best decade for fantasy comics):

Good idea, Deuce. :)

Thanks very much for all those links.

It may take me some time to explore them all.

I like to get lost in browsing and collecting art and photos on the net... while some helpful big guy slowly rubs soothing moisturising skin-cream into my feet and long legs...
...way to relax...

I will post any other good links I find, later.

Best wishes. :)

Thanks, Buxie!

That "Golden Age" blog is especially nice. LOADS of great art, with everything from pre-Raphaelites and Howard Pyle to Corben and Frazetta.

Still can't believe there isn't a good Cowboy/Western art blog/site out there somewhere. About all I could find were commercial art gallery sites.

Most definitely. B)

I'm referring to websites hosted by commercial art-monger galleries. Such are USELESS for a thread such as this because, most of the time, they take down a featured piece of art after its sale, making any links to such art pointless in the long-term. <_<

Two examples would be this: http://www.sidrichar...ex.php/cPath/21

...or this: http://www.allposter...KWID=1286559100

Why there isn't a site hosted by an enthusiast of Western/Cowboy art (or sports/boxing art), I don't know.

BTW, good to see you back, Ollonois. :D

Native American artist, Kirby Sattler, has a great website (he maintains images after they sell):

Personally, I think REH would've loved Sattler's work.

In essence, we believe that the work of any creative artist -- writer, painter, illustrator, musician, what-have-you -- is a unique expression of an artistic point of view. It should not be appropriated or altered by others without the artist's consent. No other writer has Robert E. Howard's unique point of view, and no other writer knows what Howard would have done with his character had he lived. Upon his death, his canon, the expression of his artistic vision, became fixed. Tampering with it now is desecration."

Yes, it is. B) Since we don't have a thread dedicated to his art, I'm fine with posting about it on this thread.
