I wrote a review recently for my blog about "People of the Black Circle," in which I noted was one of the fun aspects of the story was Conan forced to team up with an enemy (in this case, Kerim Shah), with both knowing they'll have to try to kill each other after achieving their common goal.

I thought it might be fun to do another blog post about other REH stories in which this happens.

So I'm trying to recall tales in which this happened. So far, I've got:

"Rogues in the House" (Conan again)

"Blood of the Gods" (El Borak")

"Trail of the Blood-Stained God" (Kirby O'Donnell)

Can anyone think of any others?

Conan and Kerim Shah in "The People of the Black Circle"
I woulda kept Thothmekri for awhile. He could come in handy.

Conan and Kerim Shah in "The People of the Black Circle"

Thank you. "People of the Black Circle" is actually the story I meant to reference in my original post. I was getting my titles mixed up. I've edited the original post to correct the error.

Hopefully, if Conan reads this, he'll be forgiving and not disembowel me.

Gods of Bal-Sagoth and Kings of the Night come to mind.

Nothing against Howard (one of the first to do so in American pop fiction), but it's an amazingly simple way to create dramatic tension in a story. :)

Black Vulmea's Vengeance, though the British commander isn't a lot of help.

The Black Stranger.

Good suggestions everyone. I've actually written about the non-Conan version of "The Black Stranger" ("Swords of the Red Brotherhood") previously in my blog and I should have thought of it right away.

I always liked the Black Vulmea version better than the Conan version. That's a completely subjective opinion, of course, but I think the story has such a strong pirate vibe to it that it fits better in the Golden Age of Piracy rather than in the Hyborian Age.

But either version fits into the "enemies forced to team up" catagory. I appreciate the reminder.

"Isle of the Eons": Incomplete, but a great read.
