The look of the book is quite important. I think the writing is more important than the look, but a good book needs both.

And, Conan needs artists who understand the world that he inhabits. There's a certain uniqueness to the Hyborian Age that is not always well represented graphically.

So...who's done it the best?

Who, to you, is the best modern Conan artist?

I've got two picks tied for my number one choice. I'd love to see Cary Nord return to the series.

But, I also love the work that Greg Ruth did on the young Conan from Born on the Battlefield. It would be an awesome thing to see what he could do with an older Conan.

Definitely a second choice for me, but still a great artist, is Tomas Giorello. Some of his stuff is quite breath-taking.

I liked what Darick Robertson with The Mad King of Gaul. I bet he could turn out a damn fine selection of Conan stories.

What about you?

How about your picks?

Giorello, for my taste the others are either to cartoonish or to realistic for my taste.

So Giorello by far number 1.

Cary Nord is my overall fave. Though his pencils at times weren't detailed they had an energy few are able to create. His work flowed. I think his Conan work phenomenal.

Second was Tomas Tomas Giorello. Like you said Boot... I would find myself awe-struck at times. His work had an edge others did not.

Third was P. Craig Russell in Conan and the Jewels of Gwahlur. Beautiful and clean style. His storytelling is amazing.

I understand the votes for Giorello. Though he's not my first pick, or even my second, he's quite good. But, no votes for Ruth? I think Ruth is awesome and probably the only true successor to Nord.

Is it that not many people read Born on the Battlefield?

I love Ruth's paintings..... But when I think of Conan I think of pencils and inks then coloring. Ruth's painted sequentials on Conan are amazing.

I like Giorello very much.
If Stewart had the oportunity to color his pencils, something that has never been done in a story before, Tomás would be even better than Cary Nord.

Agreed to all of the above
He stood like an image of the unconquerable primordial ? legs braced far apart, head thrust forward, one hand clutching the wall for support, the other gripping the ax on high, with the great corded muscles standing out in iron ridges, and his features frozen in a death snarl of fury ? his eyes blazing?? ? I wonder about Christopher Shy. He did the Pathfinder graphic novel.

I bet he could do an awesome Conan run.

Looks pretty good. So, did he do a DHC Conan comic and I missed it?

I don't know. I just remembered that I really liked the look of that book and thought he could really turn up the heat on a Conan arc.

I've been following the DH comics since #0 and my favorite artists are:

1. Cary Nord
2. Rafael Kayanan
3. Tim Truman
4. Greg Ruth
5. Tomas Giorello
7. Richard Corben
8. Darick Robertson
9. Bart Sears

I like the more gritty, darker Conan artists.

For me it's easily between Nord and Giorello, but if I had to pick a #1 I'd probably go with Giorello since his work has consistently improved since he started on the series, as well as the fact that I just really like the look of his Conan, particularly the face.

Nord would be my favorite, but his lack of consistency always bugged me. Conan's chin and nose and cheeks and general head shape were constantly changing, and I found that distracting. At times his Conan was perfect, at others it seemed all wrong to me.

Odd that their strengths lie in such different areas; I love Nord for his raw and urgent style, and I love Giorello for his detail and design. Both are great artists.

Buscema and Jusko weren't hired Dark Horse artists, jonan.

Early on I would have said Nord, but I think Giorello has become my favorite.

Big John and Joe Jusko would be on my list as well, but I would consider them Marvel artists rather than Dark Horse. So Cary Nord for me hands down - he's crossed the line from comic book art into fine art (if you know what I mean). Honorable mention to Kayanan and Giorello.

<edit> Oops - Officer Aggro beat me to the punch. Such is life. <edit>

I must redeem myself with Becky Cloonan's Belit. I don't think her art is always the best choice for Conan, but I really like her Belit. :D
