A few months back, I read somewhere that in the initial conquest of the Inka Empire, the Spanish used silver to reshoe their steeds, since iron wasn't to be had. This reminded me of Kull and his Red Slayers from at least one tale. We know that Howard modeled the assassination in By This Axe I Rule! (and later, The Phoenix on the Sword) on Pizarro's own death.
So, I'm asking: is there a more likely source (literary or historical) for the argent-shod hooves? Also, is my recollection/data correct?

I'd never heard of the Conquistadores using silver for horseshoes - makes sense when you find yourself in lands without ironworking.
This puts a different spin on the Slayers' shoes. The original impression was of how rich Valusia was, and/or how elite the Red Slayers were.
