This is a drum that I made for Burning Man. Any guess as to which deathless passage this carries?

No idea...But a wild guess would be;

"How can I wear the harness of toil
And sweat at the daily round,
While in my soul forever
The drums of Pictdom sound?"

Am I even close? Hahaha.

There's a forum called AbsoluteWrite. Try searching for that. I'm not sure if they deal with screenplays, but I think they do, and either way they have a lot of information to share concerning agents! They've got a whole host of subsections that you can have a browse through!

In Topic: Real Life "Howardian" Characters

Guys, how about William Wallace?  :)

something tells me Conan would have gone down fighting before he would have given himself up to be drawn and quartered...ouch!

Maybe not but he was still a tough guy. From what I have read he was betrayed & captured. I don't think he had much choice in the matter. Certainly didn't go out like a punk. I think he is a type of "Howardian" character. He was one tough dude.

He was also very tall for the time and massivly powerful. I went to Scotland a couple of years back and visited his monument. You should have seen his sword! It is as tall as me!!! If you disregard the Gibson film, I think Wallace was very Howardian in many ways. He could be a bastard at times - He flayed some guys skin and made a belt out of it! But then, he was an honest man who kept to his word in a world full of backstabbing tyrants.

In Topic: What Would You Want In A Conan Statue?

14 July 2010 - 05:09 PM

It would appear that a fighting pose would be in order. I guess that makes sense, considering the character is defined so much by his psysical actions. If Conan is fighting something, say Thog or the Ape from HOTD, what ever interpritation is made of one of these monsters or another character there is going to be some amount of disappointment when people see it and say 'I didn't imagine him like that.' So what would you like to see in regards to monster design? A more realistic approach, or fantastical (like Cthulu-esque, as an example)?

Also, depending on the piece, having more than one character (Conan) is going to jack up the price and there's only so much room on a base. So if you had the scene Taraniach quoted from Red Nails, would you want Conan and Valeria battleing people, or have people dead at their feet or completely out of sight?

As the others have already said, Conan has little in the way of an 'origin story' that seems to be so popular of late. However the stories to not at all suffer for it and there is also hints hidden within Howards writing about Conan's younger life for those who care to look.

In addition, the Dark Horse Conan comics have a bit of a background story to Conan, some issues having him in his adventures as a child, but they are wholly different and much more savage than the film's imagining.

I think if you want the 'Film Conan' you will be disappointed when reading the books, however, if you do want the 'Film Conan' you might as well watch the film. I really like the film myself, and it is also how I learned about Conan, but my advice would simply be to try and read the Conan stories with an open mind otherwise you'll set yourself uup for disappointment. Saying that, the books are great, and I think you've chosen well going with the Del Reys!!!!!

Nearly all of the films events are not actually taken from Howard's writing, such as Conan's family being killed. Several of the names in the movies are taken from Howards writings, though.

No matter what you should read the books. It's always good to read the books that have been made into films you've seen.

To the best of my knowledge, Thulsa Doom is from a Kull story...
