Using magic in the Hyborian Age is essentially like handling uranium: sure, you can make a power plant and provide energy for a city, but isn't it just so much more tempting to wipe one off the face of the earth instead? Also, screwing up while you're playing with the stuff will kill you, at best.
Same goes for sorcery. There are some more or less positive applications (divination, healing, etc), but if you want real power (like most sorcerers Conan runs into), you'd better start bleeding some virgins and looking into the finer points of demonic pacting.
