By all means, read all of Robert E. Howard's originals first.

Frankly, Gath (The Death Dealer) is a "Conan" archtypical character. He's a brooding, uber strong barbarian warrior who typically outsizes and outweighs his enemies significantly (humanwise) on top of being naturally intelligent. To compare really isn't going to work in the sense of who would hand who's ass. Gath is essentially "a" Conan. In reading the James Silke novels he exudes as much impregnability and savage strength as Conan. With the helmet Gath is a demigod, nigh indestructable(swallowed by a 50 crocdilian and cut his way out of it's guts or burnt his way out). Conan many times has the good sense to flee from danger (except when cornered).

Gath without helmet would be an even match toe to toe with Conan (sorry fellas, the characters are written a certain way and that's all we have to go by). With the helmet Conan's going to fight his way into a retreat or he's going to die. I hold Conan up as high as anyone else here but there it is.

I have to agree. I've read the Gath of Baal novels and liked them because there were so many similarities with Conan. I'd have to say I agree totally. Could it be long before there's a "Death Dealer" film?

I just wanted to say that after reading a lot of posts, this site isn't like some Predator, AVP or Star Trek sites, filled with squalling infants name-calling and trying to be cute. There are some very knowledgeable fans here, and I really like it. Thanks.

Take it where you can get it, that's the barbarian way. If you have to pay for it, so be it. Better than doing without right?

How about Enigma, Clannad or The Chieftans?
